Default Filter GONE!

I can't believe it. I got a new Air Maze filter (the wire screen kind) two weeks ago and yesterday I look under the hood and the screen filter is GONE! I made sure it was tight...I just can't believe it.

It does not appear that one can buy just the wire mesh filter housing or the tightening screw. I still just can't believe it.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't run air filters at all. We never run on gravel roads, so no dust. When you start your car with full choke, gas will drip from the carburetor. With a filter, that gas will accumulate in the filter body. If the engine happens to backfire, it will start that gas on fire. Safety issue.

I agree with Mike, I ran on dirt roads for a lot of years and never had an issue. The engine lasted longer than I did.

That's just the metal screen insert material. I need the whole screen element (with the ends and the wingnut bolt).

Time to shop at the local model A parts swaps... I see those parts frequently at swap meets.

I considered one of those screens until I saw one. Pretty coarse. What is their purpose??. Keep out bugs and small birds perhaps?

I know. I just could NOT make it to the swap in Woodstock, IL this weekend. That being said, I discovered the missing filter yesterday and I wouldn't have known to have bought another at the swap anyways. Making my list for next year I guess.

Braol: The tractor in my avatar is actually a 1953 Super W6. That's a low profile standard model. Same motor as a Super M. Glad you found your missing screen. mike

Hmmm......fire hazard huh? Sounds like I should take mine off then. No dirt/dusty roads for my girl anyway. Just wondering when filters were needed as these cars routinely ran on unpaved roads from the beginning?

That was back when you could get the engine rebuilt for a few hundred dollars. Price having that work done today.

So....is it filter on or filter off? Does an increased fire chance negate any future rebuild chances, when we all know A's like to backfire or can. I had one the other day in the garage. As one poster above stated.... " With a filter, that gas will accumulate in the filter body. If the engine happens to backfire, it will start that gas on fire. Safety issue."

A fire would be a game changer........or is fire talk overstated? If it's smart not to have one and Like I said, I run on dry asphalt roads.

I have this one and love it. It's a bit more, but the filter is out of the way more than the one in your link.

Good afternoon...K & N makes a filter that will fit on your 'A'. It is much more fire resistant. I did drill a 3/16th drain in mine and it has been working just fine for a number of years...Ernie in Arizona
