Re: Other names for Ford parts...
Sometimes, instead of "engine" we use "yabich"
eg "START YABICH!"

Re: Other names for Ford parts...
From down under.
Splash apron is valance. Zerk is grease nipple. Gas is petrol, as we have LPG powered cars they are gas powered. Cotter pins are split pins, to us a cotter pin is the tapered slug with a flat on it that bolts a kickstarter on a motorbike or a crank onto a bike Fenders are mudguards, but somehow a fully guarded rod does not sound quite right. |

Re: Other names for Ford parts...
Emergency brake--- parking brake (Model A--- Better not try to use it for an emergency brake at much of a speed).
The rear bumpers are called mudguard protectors in some countries.

Early on as I started adding employees that did not know/understand Ford's names, it created confusion on time sheets and work lists. Now we all try to use he correct term on time sheets, punch lists, --and especially on invoices describing the work task. The one I always have problems with is what do you call the "black thing" in the picture below? . |

Re: Other names for Ford parts...
Not sure what that black thing is but the center of it is either a "ham" or a "pumkin"

Re: Other names for Ford parts...
I remember reading a service manual for something years ago where the choke was referred to as, "the strangler".

Re: Other names for Ford parts...
I have a machinist friend who, when he saw my "new" model A, said " Hey that's a great car. I haven't worked on an A-BOMB for a long time." I simply replied to him "I hope it doesn't go off while I'm driving it."

Re: Other names for Ford parts...
USA or other non-Australian word first, I think anyway;
Pick-up - Ute Phaeton - Tourer Hood - Bonnet, and this leads to other associated equipment, bonnet catches, bonnet rail etc. Convertible roof?? - Hood, we have hood bows in ours Windshield - Windscreen Fender - Mud guard Gas cap - Petrol cap Lug nuts - Wheel nuts Drive shaft - Tail shaft - Propellor shaft Valance panel - Splash apron Splash apron - Valance panel, we've swapped the two around Woodie - Station wagon Panel delivery - Panel van, unless it's used by the police, then it's a Divvy van (Divisional van). This gave birth to the MCG bay13 chant, "you're going home in the back of a divvy van, ooh aah ooh aah, ooh ooh ohh, aah aah", sung as the police escort slightly inebriated individuals from the cricket by the rest of the crowd. Tag - Number plate or rego plate. Silencer - Muffler Tail pipe - Exhaust pipe Racers tape or Cloth tape - for me, Instant airframe or Framie tape, 100MPH tape Wrench - Spanner Crescent wrench - Shifter, or NF(nut f*&^er) Pipe wrench, Monkey wrench - Stilsons |

Re: Other names for Ford parts...
I love "strangler" and "octane selector"
Had this black thing out of the car 3 times last year so i dont want to know its real name nor EVER WANT TO SEE IT AGAIN. Once i had it out, a (german) friend arrived and asked what im playing with ... I answered that this would be the "U-joint" and as he looked somewhat strange, i went on with "Universal-joint " which wasnt a help at all Over here a Hand-brake is the "Hand-Bremse" too, even you might handle it by foot (Mercedes) Merry Christmas Christoph |
