I agree with Joop.
I too am looking for a pair of the period correct headlight visors, because I don't like the current repro versions with plastic jewel indicators, that are available today from the suppliers. I have run an ad in several places for quite a while and have only heard from out of the country spammers that claim to have the product but instead are simply trying to get my money. I have also tried Bert's/Denver, since they such a huge stock of original parts, and they don't have what I'm looking for.

Yes, I agree they are different in the details but if you are trying to replicate an exact look, ....then make them yourself!! Although I have never seen the need to make any personally, I do not think they would be THAT difficult!!

Do you want to start a "build thread" here where we discuss from start to finish how to make it or would you rather just buy them?

I guess it depends on whether this is a learning project or a get-it-done project!!

One way would be to start by using a method called metal spinning. In a deep draw set-up like the thimble, I would probably use brass, but copper or aluminum has almost the same stretching ability. I think brass is marginally better than the other two. Next, make a wooden buck fixture on the lathe that will match the shape you are trying to replicate. Attach a blank to the end of the buck and spin it in a lathe as the brass is shaped around the wood. After working with it some, the brass will likely need to be annealed to soften it and then work it more to achieve the shape you are seeking.

Another way is to make a female die and start working the blank down into the die using a hardwood dowel with the same shape as the end. Again, annealing the metal as you go will keep it soft and pliable. Then once the rough shape is made, use a jewlers hammer to plannish the work repeatedly around a shaft until the metal is the shape of the thimble. Silver solder any areas that work hardens and splits.

3rd and finally, one can always take some brass or aluminum bar stock and machine them in a lathe. The first two are more challenging and follow the method of how craftsmen would likely have done it in the day. After the pieces are made, polish them and have them Nickle plated. Find the stones that you would like to use and polish them to the dimensions of your thimble. The visor would be as simple as cutting from brass sheet stock, tipping the back edge to trap between the headlight lens and the bezel, and Nickle plating after everything has been fitted.

The visors that Brent is referring to are made at the company that owns Old Stand Auto Parts and is located in Hillsdale, IL. They have both red and blue colored balls for them. They make them for all the major distributors and also make them for Harleys.

Joop, Have you ever seen these? They are MacBeth Evens lenses. Marketed as Gentleman's lenses, because other drivers know a gentleman owns this car, because he bought lenses that do not shine into the eyes of the other cars driver. What the heck are they supposed to do?

The one in post # 6 seems to be an indicator to inform the driver when his bulb goes out. The others don't seem to have any practical purpose at all.

I have the type Joop pictured. A lot nicer than the marbles.They are great, even indicating if a parking lite is out. I need one more pair. Been looking for years.

They are also an indicator.

They let you know something about the owner of the car...... don't they?
