I put a Fenton floor shift conversion on one forty or fifty years ago, when it was a pretty common occurrence. Probably more work to find a kit now-a-days than to do the install.

I was thinking the same a rich, yep in the early 60s, LOL. Think you would have to go on ebay or hit up the swap meets to come up with the hardware.

Why would you want to put in a floor shift? It's just one more place where hot air and fumes can enter the cab.

Being a truck driver when I was young, I hauled logs and later propane, to me a truck has to have at least one stick, sometimes more, coming out of the floor for the transmission/transmissions to be a truck. Just wouldn't be a truck if it doesn't.

The T98 4-speed is a truck transmission that was used back in the day. There was also a heavy duty 3-speed in use but they may be harder to find now days. The F100 always used that big bell housing with the two mounting ears on it. I believe it was the TBAC-7505-A for the big transmissions with either 3 or 4 speeds with a flathead engine. The bells changed with the Y-block intro.

My 47 dump must be a truck then. It has a 4 speed, a 3 speed Brown-Lipe axilliary, a 2-speed rear end, 2 levers that work the hydraulic bed lift cylinder, a lever to open the tail gate, and an emergency brake lever. A total of 7 sticks protrude from the floor. It is a pain in the you-no-what to drive. There is no room for your legs!

Yes, that would be a truck. I've never seen a 3-2-2 setup like you have. I don't quite understand the need for the two speed differential. I'm sure it makes for interesting shifts.

It sounds like an old Snow Go snow blower truck. Those things had all sorts of levers and cables.

Most of the old bob tail dump trucks only used a 2-speed axle with a 4-speed transmission but it depends on how old it is and what aftermarket company made the bed and lift set up. My Pop's first dump bed truck was a 1940 Chevrolet Deluxe COE with a 216. It had a real interesting shift linkage set up with a lever operated 2-speed rear axle plus the hydraulic lift set up. His next one was a 1948 F6 Ford. It was one of the Yellow ones with a red Tradewinds bed and you could tell it was coming from a mile off easy.

Everybody needs a floor shift these days even if an automatic. Almost every new car or truck has them now. 8^) Jack E/NJ

My father built the dump box. It has a Gar-Wood lift mechanism consisting of two curved, cast rails attached to the bed and two rollers attached to a tee off of the cylinder which pushed the bed up as it rolled up two tracks and engaged the curved pieces. (Hard to explain). The running gear was originally in my grandfather's heavy equipment transport set-up. I never ever used all of the gears and speeds available for farm work.

A floor shifter was the first modification we did to 50/60 model car and trunks in my youth!

Just about every aftermarket floor shift conversion kit available today says they will work in any pickup '49-'68 (but not in cars). I have one new in the box I will sell for $50 plus shipping. (I think they may be even cheaper on eBay.)

I remember an old Popular Science article that explained how to make your own gated shifter for a side shift 3-speed. This was before folks could buy them for the side shift transmissions. It's a way lot more easy to find an old Hurst unit and fabricate all the linkages than to go through all that. The Hurst shifters likely were made that way in the beginning. A lot of the aftermarket part manufacturing started out in guys garages.

Made a floor shift out of the column shift mechanism on my '54 Ford. That was in 1961 or 2. Worked well.
