Default Gas float issue

I'm rebuilding my gauge. I'm using cork gaskets and the modern float. Someone before me had worked on the gauge because the float is to long. The bracket is ending inside the float. Can I slice the float to fit the float arm and if so will that harm the resistance to todays gases. Or is it best to lengthen the arm.

you need to cut the float down to fit ....Then I made a cage of light wire to insure the float and clip stays on

I also slice the new float to tuck the wire into, then I use a Vice-Grip to flatten the end to hold the small brass washer in place. Solder would also work as long as the wire is shiney clean where the solder goes.
