1935 horn wiring problems
Ok I am trying to get two new horns wired up on a 1935 restoration. The wiring harness has 6V to ground on the two yellow wires on each side. On the Blue Yellow wire I get a short to ground when the horn button is depressed and a break when it is released on both sides.
This Seems correct to me at this point, so this is where the fun begins. I have two new 6v horns from Dennis Carpenter or some other vender. I have taken them apart to see which terminal is ground and which goes through the electro magnet. If I check both the terminals they short to each other and to ground (not sure if that is correct). When I hook up the right horn it works correctly (it works with the horn button) but I get 6v to ground on both wires on the left. and can't hook the other horn up. Any thoughts anyone. Could the problem be in the horns themselves? thanks |

Re: 1935 horn wiring problems
Well, I'm confused if that helps. The Yellow wire should be power from the battery via the starter switch. And the Blue/Yellow wire is the ground via the horn button. Sounds like they are working OK. And also, one horn works, correct? So have you tried only connecting the other horn and see if it works independently?

Re: 1935 horn wiring problems
if the positive of the battery is ground, then you may have to reverse your wiring

Re: 1935 horn wiring problems
ssrcobra, Neither horn terminal should short to ground. They should be isolated from the horn body

Re: 1935 horn wiring problems
I think if he bought them from Carpenter, these are new repro horns and they are grounded through the frame and you have to use a horn relay with them. the horn switch will run the relay and the relay then powers the horns. I had a pair of the repros on my 35 and thats the only way to make them work. You can't wire them up like originals.

Re: 1935 horn wiring problems
I would like to know, is the yellow wire from the starter switch to the front harness to the horns a separate wire all by itself flopping around loose,
or is it included in a harness? |

Re: 1935 horn wiring problems
it is in a harness,
the harness is correct and working correctly both yellow wires show 6v across them to ground both blue and yellow wire give connectivity to ground only when the horn button is depressed Carolina-bob hit the head on the nail or at least kind of, I think it is the after market horn or they where grounded to frame not needing the horn but to give them connectivity. I hooked up my originals (which sound so much better) with them laying on the floor of the garage. everything is working. So, I plan to you the originals and just make sure they are isolated from the frame. thanks you all for any help |
