I use a magnet, it will still stick to 1/16 inch filler but you can tell by how it sticks how much filler there is. If there is heavy bondo, the magnet should fall right off.

I use a piece of the plastic "refrigerator" magnets. They are so weak that the slide right off even a skim layer of filler. Gar Williams
