Need water pump rebuilt or to purchase
Attachment 348299
Attachment 348300 Attachment 348301 Attachment 348302 Barners, My neighbor across the street has a '54 F-500, with a Y block 292. It is a flat bed with a winch. Nice truck. He is new to the hobby. He has a bad water pump and has had no success in getting a replacement. Any information on a vendor would be appreciated. Rebuild what we have or purchase a rebuilt one. Thank you for your reply, gnolnor Last edited by gnolnor; 01-25-2018 at 09:12 PM. Reason: add photos |

Re: Need water pump rebuilt or to purchase
I can’t get the attachments to open. But if it’s a 54, it’s a 239 or (unlikely) a 256 Merc motor. They used a smaller water pump that’s hard to come by. If it actually has a 272-292, that larger pump is readily available. Look at the casting numbers, and try reposting some pictures. A lot of early motors where replaced by later motors.

Re: Need water pump rebuilt or to purchase
The original motor in a '54 would have been a 239 or 256, not a 292. '54 was a first year "Y", and many differences from '55 on.
Find a parts store with old guys and books,,,, beat me to it,,,,,,,,, |

Re: Need water pump rebuilt or to purchase
Check the centering pin on the old pump. If it is the larger one it is a truck pump and if a 292 look for a pump for a 64 truck. If it has the smaller pin then it is a car pump and these should be available from the old car parts suppliers.

Re: Need water pump rebuilt or to purchase
In an F-500 from '54 is there a possibility it's a Lincoln y-block engine... ???
If so it should be easily ID'd by a double ridge in the valve covers next to the hold-down nuts. (see images at this link) http://ford-y-block.com/lincoln.htm . Last edited by dmsfrr; 01-25-2018 at 11:05 PM. |

About a year ago I needed a pump for my 59 pickup. The 3/4" shaft were unobtanium. I finally found a couple places that still had NOS and paid through the teeth for one. I must have found a dozen listings for a reman, mostly A1 Cardone but all out of stock, even A1's website. |

Re: Need water pump rebuilt or to purchase
The water pump will have to be sent away to be rebuilt, unless you rebuild it yourself. I had to do the same for my 54 F100 with the 239 Yblock. Since the 55 and 56 water pumps were different and the 54 was a one year pump, rebuilt ones are not out there.
Show us some pictures of this 54 F500.
