35-36 Open car Trico wiper motor
I have some doubts about the 35/36 wiper motor for my 35 Phaeton. This car use the "heart type" Trico wiper motor, but my car doesn't have nothing.., so I don't have any reference.
I've read that the 35/6 Phaeton/Roadster wiper motor shaft have 1-7/8" length and Cabriolet/Conv. Sedan 2-5/8" length. But apart from this difference, There are another differences between them?. Can someone send photos of a Phaeton wiper motor with the necessary parts to attach it to the windshield frame? Regards, Fredys |

Kent Jaquith can help with the length of the inner and outer shafts and the length of the spacer between the motor and the W/S frame( if your car uses one). He may be able to modify your motor for proper fit if the shafts are short.

I was trying to respond to this but the forum kept logging out before I could get the post finished. This is a good site, but this short time out sucks.
Here are a couple of pictures of the wiper in my phaeton. It mounts through the windshield frame and the shaft is only about an inch or so long. This car was restored in 1973, no idea if this is an original wiper or replaced the original when the work was done. John

Re: 35-36 Open car Trico wiper motor
John: I do not believe you have the correct open car wiper and wiper arm on your car. I believe the entire motor should be chrome plated with a heart shaped cover on the rear. The wiper arm attaches in the same way as the closed car wiper arms. Your motor is very much like the closed car 34 motor with the long control rods that extend through the header panels that cover the motors.
Below is a 35 Cabriolet wiper motor and although the shaft and the mounting may be slightly different the appearance is the same as your car. |

In front of that is a stamped upside-down L-shaped piece with horizontal notches on each side of the hole in the center. These notches line up with the protrusions on the die cast spacer. The foot of the "L" fits over the top of the windshield frame securing the whole assembly in place once the rubber and flat washers and nut on the outside of the windshield frame are in place on the end of the shaft casing. Unfortunately, for some reason I am unable to upload the photo at this time. I'll try later. |

Re: 35-36 Open car Trico wiper motor
I have tried repeatedly to attach a cropped version of this photo showing only the wiper motor on the left side, but so far to no avail. If you enlarge this photo you will be able to perceive the die cast spacer and stamped piece that fits over the top of the inside of the windshield frame that I cite in my note above. The wiper motor is upside down relative to its position mounted on the car and the spacer and stamping are oriented accordingly.

Just a tip... If you require more thought or typing time consider composing in a text editor or word processing application, then copying and pasting into Fordbarn. |

Re: 35-36 Open car Trico wiper motor
The spacer David is reference to may be like the 35 Cabriolet spacer below but I am sure the length, in the photo, is not correct.

Re: 35-36 Open car Trico wiper motor
Don,
Thanks! I can almost see the notches in the stamped piece. I believe you're right that the cabriolet spacer, while the correct configuration, is longer than that used on the phaeton/roadster. Sheldon, Those presently on eBay are for the cabriolet/convertible sedan which in this instance is unfortunate. Dave |

Re: 35-36 Open car Trico wiper motor
To expand on Dave's description:
Closest to the body of the motor is a die cast upside-down L-shaped spacer that fits over the shaft casing. At the outer end of this spacer are two raised protrusions positioned horizontally opposite one another. (SEE "A" IN IMAGE) In front of that is a stamped upside-down L-shaped piece (SEE "B" IN IMAGE) with horizontal notches on each side of the hole in the center. These notches line up with the protrusions on the die cast spacer. The foot of the "L" fits over the top of the windshield frame securing the whole assembly in place once the rubber "C" and flat washers "D" and nut "E" on the outside of the windshield frame are in place on the end of the shaft casing. |

Sheldon,
Please let Fredys know that you have those. Plus he will need Don's A and B at a minimum. Last edited by DavidG; 04-10-2016 at 02:15 PM. |
