I have a 48 coupe that the eng was re-built several years back and is very noise valves ticking, other then that it cranks and runs great. Can the valves be adjusted with the motor in the car?.

Yes, they can. You will need to pull the heads and the intake manifold.

Assuming it has adjustable lifters, all you'll have to pull is the intake manifold.

It is possible that the valves are sticking. Pete

depending on whether your engine has adjustable lifters or not, if it has adjustable lifters all you have to do is pull the intake and reset the noisey valves, if it has non adjustable valves the can still be adjusted if you find a friendly mechanic that will do the work, you will have to pull one or two heads and intake, remove the noisiey valve and either grind the seat or valve face to get the proper clearance, or get one adjustable lifter to replace the solid one(s)

Didn't mention but have you been driving it on a more or less regular basis or has it been sitting ? My '47 sat before I bought it and it was bit noisy, even thought I had a bad piston pin. I started with adding MMO and Seafoam to the gas, and still do, and driving the car relatively often. I also use 10w-30 oil, add a little zinc to the oil, and change the oil every 1000 miles. I find the engine likes long drives and getting heated up. It is now relatively quiet. These flatheads, without hydraulic lifts, overhead valves, fuel injection, etc are not like later engines. I've been spoiled by "modern" cars.

Try drizzling some MMO down the carb for a few minutes keeping it running
all the time. Do this outside as there will be a lot of smoke. G.M.
