Post 1948 Ford Gearbox - what year is this item?
Post 1948 Ford Gearbox - what year is this item? The Number on the side reads 01A*7006A 1 I believe that it was out of a 1949 Ford Custom? Any help identifying this gearbox would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Isn't "01A" 1951? I have a hard time telling the '49-'50's from the '51's (externally, the rear mount is different). If this is still up in the air tomorrow, I'll check at my shop, as I have both.

Re: Post 1948 Ford Gearbox - what year is this item?
Are we sure that is a "1"? The bottom of that '1' isn't clear to me. Normally, "01A-" refers to 1940 Ford 'passenger car'. That "7006" certainly means 'transmission case assembly' in Ford-talk. I was pretty sure that "0BA" represented 1950. Denny should know...wasn't there a "1BA" designation for 1951 stuff? I think we can all agree that ain't no '40 Ford trans. Could that possibly be a "Q1A"? DD

The casting number is kind of funky. 01A would be 1940 but it's obviously not from that era. If it is C1A then that would indicate 1961 design. Last edited by rotorwrench; 09-05-2020 at 09:33 AM. |

I think C1A which would be Canadian 1951.

.
I guess looking at that very closely, it COULD be a "C", which would make a whole lot more sense. Being as this WAS posted by "mercman from oz", did this trans come out of an Aussie car? Don't some of those parts (like drive train) originate in Canada? DD |

If this was from a right hand drive car, the boss on the side opposite of the shift levers could be for the clutch equalizer bar that is on the shift plate in a left hand drive car. I don't know if the shift levers are reversed on a right hand drive, though.

Re: Post 1948 Ford Gearbox - what year is this item?
I think that it's out of a '52-54 Ford. It's got the forward mount, but I don't see the lug on the side cover where the clutch linkage mounts. Maybe the OP can tell us it it's there or not. Here are a couple of pictures of a '51 transmission I am working on and you can clearly see the clutch linkage mounting lug. Although this is an overdrive transmission, the mounts are in the same place. The mount on the bottom of the tailshaft is about 3" back from the main housing/tailhousing mating surface. On a 49 or '50, it's about 6 ot 7 inches back. The change was made to accommodate the new for 1961 Fordomatic transmission.
The linkage looks kind of funky as well. I've never thought about the clutch linkage on a right-hand drive car, so I guess I really don't know what to think. |

Re: Post 1948 Ford Gearbox - what year is this item?
If it's a C then it could be the Canadian version of the 1A-7006-A transmission case. Casting numbers on the case will be related to the casting only and would be for factory ID match up during build up of parts into a unit or for a new bare case housing. I'm not sure how long Ford of Canada continued using the C for made in Canada prefix identifier but it was likely up into the 50s for a time since the controlling interest was purchased by Ford Dearborn in that time frame.
The 1A prefix would have been for 1951 but that case may have also been used as a replacement on pre-1951 cases. My parts books show the 1A-7006-A was used from 1949 through 1954. The later transmission case for regular Ford transmissions was B6A-7006-A used at least through 1959. These were the 259 series types. The Thunderbird cars has the T85 heavy duty type that had the part number C1AZ-7006 and it was used through 1958 so you can see that the number prefixes were changing over to the new system in those years. The shift cover housing was somewhat interchangeable between cases and they have the clutch mountings so the main case could be the same for the most part. Tail housings could also be changed for different rear mount applications. Overdrive applications had to have a different case due to the lock out feature and the bolt up of the overdrive housing. What would the nuts/studs on the bottom of the case be for?
I've never seen a 3-sp with stamped levers and clevis connections.

I vote for RHD, look how short the shift rods are. Probably had some
monkey motion to adapt to RHD. |

Here is another picture of this Transmission. I believe that it originated in Canada and would be set up for Right Hand Drive. |

Re: Post 1948 Ford Gearbox - what year is this item?
those bolts on the bottom bolt the crossover linkage assembly to the case , there is a lot of moving parts on a 49/57 ford rhs gear shift , however our rhd cars have a mirror version of the usa ones our clutch fork exits the drivers side
