Default Spider Doesn't Reach Light Switch

Hi,
In my 1930 coupe, the spider does not reach into my light switch. The previous owner did not have a spring or retaining clip installed so I believe the spider would simply fail down into the switch. Could it be that I have the wrong length rod?

Thanks,
Jerry

That is the most likely explanation.

It looks about right to me, is the whole thing fitting together completely? It could just be a repo bulb that isn't matching up correctly, if you only put the top half on you can see how far the spider lacks of catching in the slots. It seems like I had to mess with mine a little but that was 35 years ago and haven't looked at it after I got it working.

By fitting the top half, the spider almost reaches the slots in the switch assy but not enough to catch. My lights stayed on after initial assembly because that is the way the switch went together. In order to be able to test drive this car tomorrow I removed the retainer clip. The spider engages and the switch is happy now. Obviously I will need to resolve this.

I had the same problem too. I found an original light switch bulb at the swap meet for $2 that allowed the spider fit like it should..
