Made my own engine stand adapter today, as nobody has them in stock.

Is it pretty well balanced for turning the engine upside down? How far above the oil pan rail is the pivot centerline?

May I ask what you do to install the oil pan? Do you remove the lower rail piece??

I'll have to hang it from the shop crane to put the pan on.

So far so good. When I pull the flywheel I may have to do some adjustments.

From experience in doing many of these engines, you are NOT going to like doing it that way. Modern gaskets do not fit that well to begin with, ...and one slipped/pinched gasket generally finds a way to hemorrhaged oil. Might I suggest you consider modifying your design so the pan and the gaskets & seal can be installed with the pan rails facing upward.

I added a reduction gear to my engine stand, sure makes turning an out-of-balance item easier.

Good point. I've had this A since 1963 and have done it under the car several times with no problem. This engine I pulled and replaced in 1970 after a broken piston, and it's been sitting under the workbench since then. Now that I'm retired it's something to do, I may reinstall it as its the VIN# on the title.

Very interesting Katy. May I ask where you got the reduction unit from?

IMO, one of the cheapest/easiest ways to place a gear reduction rotator onto an engine stand is to use an air brake slack adjuster. Place a 9/16 socket onto the adjuster bolt and spin it in the direction you want the engine to rotate. When you remove the socket (-or wrench), the sleeve pops out and the engine will lock in that location.

I bought it (new) at a swap meet, it is similar to this:
https://www.alibaba.com/pla/Die-cast...QaAskGEALw_wcB

They are available with different ratios, the one I have is 60 to 1

I had the oppurnity to see a K.R.Wilson rebuild stand this summer. I came home and nuttered my engine stand. T he support rail must be on top of the oil pan rail. I also offset the mounting point on the water inlet 2 inches to the rear. Engine is rebuilt but no flywheel yet. I will report when complete.
