Default water pump lubricant

Everyone recommends using WP lube with antifreeze in our cars. One question How does this solution get by the WP seal to do its job unless it is already leaking?

I thought it was just an obsolete term to denote "something to put in coolant to reduce rust and crud".

I used to run that stuff about 45 years ago (when I ran stock pumps with bushings). My bet is that it didn't do a dang thing. The original 37-48 pumps had an oil-lite bronze bushing that received some amount of oil through a hole in the block (just a sort of 'drip feed' from the cam gear area). I'm not sure much oil ever actually got to the bushing - never took a pump off that had any appreciable amount of oil in the transfer hole . . . so who knows.

In today's world I have Skip rework my stock pumps and put in sealed roller bearings (like the truck pumps had) - so I no longer have to worry about pump lubrication and leaking bushings.

The seal needs lubrication too.
