Question Model B fuel pump

I recently bought a Model B fuel pump. But it has a problem. The thumb screw was overtightened somewhere in the past and the needle tip has been crushed.
Can anyone tell me what the needle valve with the wing nut thumb screw is designed to do??? It appears to be a drain valve, but I've never seen another fuel pump with a drain valve. Why would I want to drain the fuel pump anyway? And where is the sediment bowl (if any).
I have a '31 Tudor with a B engine so the fuel pump would only be necessary if I went to a Stromberg 97. But I'd like to fix it. I'm confused. Please help.

Hey Roger,
No, not the only one with that type train valve. There are several places that rebuild and sell repair parts/kits for fuel pumps...including yours.
Why not drain the fuel, if the vehicle is to set for long periods, eh ? As fuel evaporates, it leaves TARS/VARNISHES that will make you wish that you could drain old fuel.
For a source of parts/rebuild (among others) try Now and Then Automotive (781)335-8860. Plus is that they claim to sell ethanol proof diaphragm also.
