I had a similar thing happen a few years ago. The noise would only occur when de-accelerating. The cause was found to be that several tabs that connect the engine splash pans to the engine pan had broken. The noise was caused by the tabs vibrating against the pan. I had the tabs welded and made some brackets to better support the tabs.

The easiest method would be to to upload the file to youtube, then post the link to the file here. Looking forward to hearing it and might help to determine what the sound is.

I had a similar problem many years ago. I had an old friend (RIP) go over things with a stethoscope, his opinion was that it was the pinion bearing. We pulled it apart, and he was dead right. Bearing had collapsed, and fortunately did no damage to the crown wheel or pinion. The noise only occurred when decelerating.

I experienced this problem with a rear axle in which the pinion bearing retainer nuts had come loose. The result was a driveshaft that was no longer fixed in place and was able to move back and forth and hammering forward upon deceleration.
