Re: 36 Ford steering box question
As most lovers of old cars know, the early V8 Fords, as are all old cars are very prone to leaking oil from the steering gear boxes. In the reputed good ole days it was a common practice to put chassis lube in the steering gear box in lieu of gear oil to minimize the leakage. I worked in many service stations when I was a teen during the mid '50's, a common practice was to pull the gear box file plug, stick the lube gun tip into the gear box an pull the trigger a few times.
Using chassis lube in the steering box eliminated a lot of customer complaints regarding oil leaking from their vehicle. When STP, Motor Honey oil additives came into the automotive market during the late '50's it became a common solution to a quick efficient fix for leaking steering gears. Many people use John Deere Corn-Head oil in their steering gears with great success, I have been using Motor Honey, STP in my '36 for over 50 years, I belong to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it club",,
