Default Intake/exhaust gasket and painted block

I think I know the answer but just wanted to check what everybody else is doing to ensure a good seal on the exhaust and intake manifold.

Just painted the block and did not mask off the area around the intake and exhaust ports. Is it necessary to scrape the paint off where the intake/exhaust gaskets mate to the block to ensure a good seal or can I just leave the ford green paint in place and just put the gaskets against the paint?

Also what is the consensus on exhaust gland rings, Yes or no?

Thanks for your input.

I put it right over the paint and yes use the glad rings
I have had mo issues what so ever
Just make sure to check the tightness every so often, every time i check the head torque i check the exhaust along with lots of other bolts

If you want to use gland rings, be sure your block has the machined recess for them, and be sure your manifolds are in straight alignment and also have the recesses. Fit the manifolds and rings without the gaskets to see if they fit, since the block or the manifolds may have been machined for trueness at an earlier time. Use the correct copper clad original type gaskets, not the thin one piece steel gasket.
Personally, in over 50 years of this stuff, I have never used gland rings.

I have a gland ring rattling around inside my roadster muffler. It lets me know when I'm driving too fast. Jeff

I'm with jd. After at least two experiences of gland rings coming out and falling into the muffler ( plus bending my tailpipe bracket, and subquentuly cracking a manifold) I no longer use them. Not had any problems .
