Default problem with 1934 air cleaner

This happened to day. We put original air cleaner on 34 4 door. first time for original air cleaner. car would not run proper, like choke on -- ran it like flooded -- tried several things-- ended up when air cleaner was removed 34 ran fine ---put air cleaner back on eng would start to die. So I tried a different 34 air cleaner. Ran fine . then we look and see a small plate in inside center of air cleaner that has several 1/4 inch holes . we removed plate and all is good . 34 now runs fine . My guess is this is or was instaled in air cleaners for V-8 60 eng. anyone know for sure ?

If it is an original air cleaner as you'd stated, well, no such thing as a 60HP in '34. That answers your question definitively.

Mikes tub did this and it was the felt under the top . Stitched seam came apart and it sucked down choking it .

I did not say this was a air cleaner for a 1934 ford V8 60 hp . I meant that did a V8 60 have an air cleaner like a 34 only with this plate to restrict the air flow.

I had that problem on my 33, it sucked the felt pad down into the carb.

I see your logic but it is highly illogical for any restriction to be placed on an air cleaner. The engine and carb do all the metering needed.
