Default Need Carb Cleaned or Rebuild

Wanting some advice on wither I should just clean out or rebuild the carb on my truck.

The truck starts up and runs fine, no dying and no cutting out. When you press on the gas peddle it just spits and chokes out and the truck stopping running if you let it, if you release the peddle it goes back to idle. It does not matter how long you let it warm up.

I am thinking it might just have a bit of junk in the carb as I can see stuff in the sediment bowl. I did remove and clean out the internal carb filter but it did not have much in it.

Also, can I add a fuel filter somewhere to better protect the carb from ingesting this bad stuff from the tank.

Thanks

You’re starving for gas(lean) most likely. Where is you GAV set?
Did this just start, or is it a new problem? How long ago has the car been driven?

GAV set at 1/4 turn. When I bought the truck it was running fine. Issue started not too long back. Truck has not be driven on the street since around middle of 2020 but I still go out and start it every month or 2, make sure it runs well and has no issues. Gas is only about 6 months old.

I need to find someone local that is will to teach me how to drive it and take care of it but with covid that might be hard to do. Need to join local Model A club, just been putting it off.

6 months is old for today's ethanol blended gas if you haven't stabilized it. I'd drain the tank (Through a coffee filter) and put it in your daily driver. Put a gallon or 2 of fresh gas in the A with something like Sea Foam to try cleaning your carb, plus a std dose of fuel stabilizer. Let it run a good while. If that doesn't perk it up, I'm guessing you're in for a disassembly with attention to cleaning jets and float valve.

Does sound like it's lean. You might try opening up the GAV another 1/4 turn until the engine warms up. Then close it down to your previous 1/4 turn after you get out and run. I find that helps my pickup when it's cold, it idles well but kicks and barfs when you give it gas.

Mr. Moose's advice is sound, and you should probably do what he suggests. But if you have sediment in the sediment bowl, at least a tear-down and cleaning of the carb is probably in order. Be sure to check the float valve for free movement and adjust the float bowl height. You'll need to order a gasket set, don't re-use the old gaskets (especially the bowl gasket between the upper/lower halves) if you can avoid it. But beware - the venturi needs to be removed from the upper half and the new bowl gasket put in place before the venturi is put back in place. If the venturi is stuck then you have some additional issues to deal with.

Check that the vent hole in the gas cap is open. If it is plugged it will stop the flow of gas to the carburetor. Repo 30-31 gas caps with the single rivet in the center have a habit of allowing the gasket to rotate around the rivet and it will plug off the hole.

Another thought. I worked on a guys car this weekend and the car would idle fine, a little rough but ok. Rolled it out and tried to go and all we got was sputtering and a huge amount backfiring. Changed the condenser and the car ran like a dream. Just another possibility.

I like 1930artdeco's suggestion and while you are at it, clean and re-gap the points. Ed

These carbs are so easy to clean, I would just do it. If you are not that familiar with the disassembly just take out the one bolt that holds it together. Don't worry about taking out the jets or the float valve, just blast carburetor cleaner and compressed air backward through all the passages.

I find I have to do this about once a year. It is an easy job and takes about half an hour. I've done it on the side of the road. Worth a try before digging in to anything more complicated.
