Default Where's Purdy?

Hey, any of you guys here from Purdy? I noticed he's not been on for a bit. He always has good balanced wisdom to share from experience.

Well I also have appreciated Purdy's advice and wisdom. He has been very helpful to me learning about Simmons carburetors and much more. I hope he gets the piece of mind he needs and comes back soon.
Thank you Purdy!

Illigitimi Non Carborundum! If anyone thinks the people here are bad, Try getting into politics. Most of politics is totally non technical, it's wholesale character assassination!
This is a sandbox by comparison. But it's a shame when some of our best and most experienced people are driven out by a few misspoken words. Come on Back Purdy! You're always welcome!

While I'm interested in his posts and have benefited from them, you need to remember that this cuts both ways.

I received a "nasty" comment from him in the past and left the "barn" for awhile to cool off. We are all way too human and after awhile I just figured that I'll stay positive and give others the benefit of thinking that they are just trying to help.

I have always wondered if some would get along better with others if they truly had the chance to get to know them? For example, if the ones who had "friction" actually attended a weekend workshop and had to work alongside others in a team atmosphere, would future comments here between them be different. I think so.

I fully agree with what Brent is saying.

The downside to this medium of exchange is, it is far too easy to mis-interpret what the other person is actually saying. We've all done it at some time. I don't know many who have not. The art of face-to-face socializing is being destroyed.

Technology always has a down side to it.

I worked for DEC (Digital Equipment Corp) in the past where we had a company wide "forum" that started in the early1990's. Work and non-work related subjects were discussed.

One forum that I was on had many very strong discussions about motorcycles and some of the "heat" from the discussions would melt on today's keyboards!

We had a "noters" party with lots of beer one summer and after meeting the people face to face, the forum discussions really cooled down to very enjoyable discussion.

Another forum that I attended was for gun people. An annual firing "fest" in New Hampshire with lots of firearms (full auto Thompsons to M60's to M16's) sure were a great way to become friendly with forum members!

Honestly from my experience Purdy is on target all the time . And says things in a pretty good explaining methodology and response . There are a few who just like to argue on line, as I have experienced as well. I definitely wouldn't put Purdy in that category. I believe he always shares from his experience freely to all.
It's incredible the amount of camaraderie and willingness that many share on here which is a testament to the fact of how great model a folks are . No one of us knows it all. Not even Henry or Edsel had all he answers ... The needed their counsel of engineers too.

I do think that some common and courteous sense is in order to all. And that includes those who have posted many times as well as newer members

I think it would be really cool if the two national model a clubs would have at the nationals an hour or so or at least and ability to have a room where fordbarn members could meet and chat. To get introduced and to meet and share with others .
That's what it's all about .
I think the benefits to forming friendships and connecting faces, names, and sharing the need for knowledge as well as solutions to problems would be highly beneficial to all .

We all need to keep things in perspective. Even with all the greatness that it is we sometimes need a break.
Don't make it too long Purdy !

Now how about that fordbarn social at the nationals?

Hey guys I've been reading this and I'm confused. I' m new to this and I joined because I bought and love my model A. I have a lot to learn. I am 64 years old and realize that I don't know much. I appreciate all the input from everyone that has owned A's longer than me. If you don't pass this knowledge on, where are we going to get it? If I do anything that offends anyone please accept my apologies. I could have bought one finished but that wouldn't be much fun. To me the fun is learning. I know where I'll go when I die but until then I want to work and learn and hopefully share my experience with other newbies.

Bingo!! I totally concur. It is way to easy too misinterpret what someone is trying to communicate on a forum such as this one without hearing the expression in their voice.

When I inherited my '29 coupe, it came with a 6:1 head and "modern"-style distributor. It ran fine. Here's what I learned, thanks to Purdy:

As a result of a couple of threads in which was discussed the pros and cons of modern vs original distributors, I decided to experiment and re-build mine using all-original components 'cept for a Stipe cam, A&L burn-out proof condenser and 100-wire pigtail to connect the bottom plate to the upper. I installed original points on an original upper plate I got from Bert's. It was an education and I understand a lot more about how the Model A ignition system is supposed to work.

Then, as per Purdy, I switched out my old coil for a Pertronix and set the point gap at 0.022 and the rotor and spark plug gaps at 0.035. Using Purdy's and Marco's description of how to eliminate timing backlash, I was simply blown away by the improvement in performance over my initial set-up: better gas mileage and smoother running.

As Purdy says, "there's power you can feel in the seat of your pants".

I'm glad he added that last bit because, while I felt something in the seat of my pants, I was afraid I was having issues with my Depends!

Thanks Purdy!

I appreciate the time you knowledgeable guys spend on the Barn. Your contributions have inspired me to learn more about my car and have benefitted my enjoyment of this hobby and ability to properly maintain my "A".

Many of you should be ashamed of yourself, how far do you go? this is why a lot of us don't post,( like Purdy, ) some opinions should be kept to yourself,? ( our DAD ) always said .if you have nothing good to say. say nothing at all. end this thread.
