I have read that I could, but..
I wanted your opinions.
I read some time ago that I could reverse the installation of the locking/non-locking door handles on a 30 CCPU. I also read, a long time ago, that the reason the locking handle was on the passenger side was for safety reasons while exiting the car. I would really like the locking handle on the driver's side as most of us don't want to slide out the passenger side. Yeah, not as original, but no point car here. Thanks! Larry |

I also believe the reason for the locking handle being on the passenger side was for safety reasons. As it is not a point car, can't see a good reason not to switch them over if the handles fit OK.

Re: I have read that I could, but..
You can certainly swap the handles, but then you cannot lock the passenger door unless you remove the panel and install the sliding lock assembly. As an alternative you could install a locking handle on each side.
I get out the driver's side, help the woman out of her side, reach over and lock my door by sliding the lock handle, and then lock her door with the key. |

Re: I have read that I could, but..
Both my doors are keyed. Couldn't be bothered to reach across the seat each time I locked it.
Remember when you never locked the car AND left the keys in it?? Never locked the house either. Times have changed. Paul in CT |

Did you have any problems installing the locking door handles on both sides? Any inside issues? Larry |

When I was a kid my parents would run out to the cars and make sure the keys were in them when we heard of a prisoner escaping from the nearby state penitentiary. That way if the escape happened to come to our place he wouldn't have to come inside and "ask" for the keys.

Back in the 60s I owned a couple of Austin Minis that locked only on the drivers side. One could not be a gentleman and open the passenger door for your date without scurrying to the drivers side and reaching across. Not very suave. Never thought of swapping handles.

Unfortunately being a gentleman and "suave" seems to be a dying tradition. :-((

Re: I have read that I could, but..
This is an interesting thread. I get out, lock the driver door inside then close the door. Now it is locked and walk around to help the lady out, and lock her door with the key. No reaching across.
We return, unlock her door, she gets in, unlocks mine from the inside, then all ok. Many times, I don't lock the car at all. Geez, I could leave the keys in it but then, what average person could start it?! |

I drive a roadster. I just rely on nobody knowing how to start it.

Re: I have read that I could, but..
I gotta remember to take the keys out of the ignition when I wander off.
I'm not sure Ford or the rest concerned themselves with safety much. By 1928 there was still a lot of dirt roads left. Heck still a lot in the 50's. It may be holdover from those days. You slide across the seat and get out on the sidewalk. Less mud. That's my theory.

Re: I have read that I could, but..
Why not get another locking handle and re-key it to the same key?
