Default tilloston gasket seepage

Cannot seem to solve the gas seepage from the gasket on my carb. Have put straight edge on surfaces and they appear not to be warped, cleaned them with emory and replaced gasket twice......still getting bleed through. What am i missing???

I don't think you are missing anything. I have never dealt with a Tillotsen carburetor but Marvel Scheblers tend to warp also.

What I have found to work is to get the surfaces as straight as possible.

Then I use a softer material for the gasket, instead of the paper ones provided in the kits. I cut my own gaskets from 1/32" thick cork/buna-n gasket material.

Lastly, ensure you do not over tighten the screws. I tighten the screws until the lock washer just flattens, no more.

Hope this works for you.

I had the same problem with a Tillotson. A heavy coat of of Copper Coat sealant on both sides of the gasket and assembled while still tacky solved the problem. It’s been dry now for several years.

Have you tried putting both halves together without the gasket to see just how close the two halves are to fitting properly ?

Agree with Patrick. I have only done two Tillies with the oven trick and both worked well. I use a large hose clamp and cinch it down pretty well. Place in a pre heated oven 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Take it out and with an oven mit or welding gloves tighten just a whisker more and let cool to room temp.

Simple fix. Get a can of Prime Seal (by Versachem) type 3 Aviation Gasket Sealant at Orielly's for less than $10, brush it on both sides of carb, place the gasket in between, and she'll never leak again. You can use that sealant just about anywhere, and its easy to apply.

Isn't that the same as Permatex #3? The looks of it alone would turn me off. Not sure i would rely on any sealant on a carburetor.

of course if you use sealant on both sides of the gasket you will need a new gasket every time you take it apart and have a bit of work to get the gasket/glue off the surfaces

Kurt, that is exactly one of the reasons I make my own gaskets out of cork/buna-n. The softer material conforms to the slight warpage. I use no sealant.

I also make my own cork gasket for the Tilly and Marvel. The Guy in Texas does a excellent job on rebuilding both types.
