Default '34 foam rubber piece

Does the foam rubber pad pictured below go between the top of the steel transmission cover plate and the rubber transmission cover mat? Or, is it sandwiched between the steel transmission cover plate and the top of the transmission? This, on a '34 Sedan....

What's that small rectangular slot toward the bottom of the foam piece for? How is that piece oriented? - Round section toward the engine?....

The small slot is for the hand brake which will dictate the orientation.

I see they sell a rubber 'boot' or cover that fits over the top of the shift tower. I've seldom seen the item on restored '33's and '34's. Is this boot factory correct? If so, what is its color?
