My 1954 BMW motorcycle had a very efficient air filter and no oil filter. My 1960 Velocette had an oil filter and no air filter. Both needed a rebuild after about 75,000 miles. I wonder how far they would of gone with both?

Regarding Sea Slugs Question. I have been a Model A man ever since I could legally drive a car but in my declining years I have developed a closet liking for Dodge. Tucked away in my shed amongst all the Model A stuff is a 1928 Dodge Victory Six. It has an oil filter, although not full flow, ( but easily converted) an air cleaner, 7 main bearing pressure fed crank and hydraulic brakes. If only Henry had not fallen out with those Dodge boys back in 1914. Happy Motoring.

According to the below link, the first replaceable oil filter was used on a 1924 Chrysler.

There's a bit of a history of filters here:

Did a 500 mile oil change on a NEW '54 Mercury, had to drop loose the exhaust pipe to get the can type filter off! So much for "FORDS' BETTER IDEAS"-----"Maybe" it was designed by the Guy in the winged HARDHAT???

An oil filter is not necessary for a stock Model A engine.

Restriction: Since a Model A pump is a positive displacement pump, there is not a lot of restriction to flow. Restrictive losses to flow would be dependent on the condition or clearances within the pump.

Desirable...that is a different question and you will get lots of opinions.

On my stock Pickup with Babbitt motor, I have no filter.
On my inserted Phaeton motor, I have an A-Ford-Able filter.
I always suggest an oil filter when building insert bearing engines for customers.

Good Day!
