I beg to differ. Compare a chrome plated item next to a nickel plated item and you will clearly see the difference. True, chrome does protect the underlying nickel, however their appearances are different.

Chrome= Cold bluish tint.
Nickel= Warm silver like tint.

All three coats are thin but none are opaque. The process is done so that they will all remain well attached to the base material and to each other. Ornamental chrome plate is picky about what it will stick to. Chrome doesn't tarnish like copper and nickel.

A bit off topic, does anyone make black decals for the ribbed dash inserts, instead of trying to paint them?

I find it relatively easy to cover the edges of the inserts with thin masking tape then carefully cut away around the perimeter with razor blades and a sharp utility knife. Clean the panel with acetone before you apply the tape, and use a semigloss or satin black paint from a rattle can. I’ve done a couple this way with good results.
