Default 1929 Sport Coupe Top Question

Did Sport Coupes ever come from the factory with zippers for the rear window ? The original top on mine had snaps/flaps like roadster tops.

thanks - Jim

I’ve only owned Sport Coupes since 1962.

No zippers. Snaps.

Enjoy.

Thanks! That’s what I thought. I’m looking for someone who can make an original style top with snap & flaps.

I think the early sport coupes just had the cinch fasteners but they eventually started putting side zippers on them. I don't have the judging standards book so I don't know when that happened. Classtique kits come with a zippered rear curtains.

The zippers keep the curtain more stable.

When we got our 30 SC, the top was long gone so we got a kit from now defunct L-B. AFAIK, the original 30-31 material has never been reproduced so the kit was tan canvas. I assume it was otherwise authentic. The rear curtain had lift-the-dot fasteners along the bottom to secure it to studs in the wood belt rail. The sides had flaps that fit into pockets on the quarters of the main top. The curtain was sewn only at the top so it could be swung into the cab. There were straps that stretched between the bows on the inside. Those had lift-the-dot studs to secure the curtain when open.

The Cinch fasteners were used in original production and they would hold the curtain up pretty well. LB changed several things when they were making kits. It was bound to happen after some materials were no longer available. A lot of the Sport Coupe tops I see are replacements. Most don't have the thin sheet metal former strips sewn into the top side radiuses to hold the form of the top sides. The whipcord top material was likely all gone by the 1970s.
