"BEST" standard flathead carb to use in a boat??
What are recommendations for the "BEST" standard flathead two barrel carb to use in a boat?? I will have two of them.
In this case "best" means things like "least likely to leak gas and cause the boat to blow up" and things like that... |

Not sure your budget.
Hilborns are neat and probably, or more safe. http://hilborninjection.com/product/...fuel-injector/ Maybe a weber? |

I asked the question out of pour ignorance, then continued reading... I have yet to make up my mind on anything. Fuel injection and four barrel carbs were not even in the other options category.... "BEST" standard flathead two barrel carb" was the brief... |

Since acceleration isn't a concern, any carboration that can provide proper and adequate air/fuel mix at maximum torque output, which assumes the boat's prop is correctly sized for that. The stock two-barrel carb on my old 289 works fine driving a 14 x 10 Columbia prop that max's the engine at 4100 rpm.

I finished a boat motor last summer........one STROMBERG 97. runs like a champ. I built
the fuel pump to put out 1 1/2 psi. My customer had a genuine FORD marine intake (alum) that featured the integral wedge to keep the carb 'level' with the big tilt the motor had in the boat. Charlie ny |

Re: "BEST" standard flathead carb to use in a boat??
As usual there´s different ways to use a boat to...
First thing is do you need a powervalve in the carb ?? If answer is no...and with the lack of a pile of us vintage parts and a budget i would go dual 94 with plugged powervalves. Spark arrestors are a must on any carb in a boat...no matter what brand. |

Bulge blowers are good also... to move the air around before starting... fuel leaks are a no no. And I will have to ventilate the engine block back into the inlet manifold. etc etc... |

Re: "BEST" standard flathead carb to use in a boat??
As of the 1950's, I spark arresters on carbs and elec bilge blowers became required by law in most if not all US states and federal waters. As well, forward facing air scopes with air hoses to bilge level, plus rear facing deck units with hoses to bilge level to suck bilge air out when moving. The bilge blowers should have a timer on them connected to engine/starter to run "x'" amount of minutes before the engine can be started.
I never provided any protection measures to my starter motor or alternator in those days. The starter had a clamp-cover anyway. More often, explosions happen when tanks rust thru or fuel line connections leak. Use aircraft armored flex connectors. Boats tend to have a lot more vibration going on. Always good to do an inspection each time before using the boat. Diesel power is safer. |
