Need help identifying generator
Im putting together a 1929 Model A from a pile of parts from all the Model A years. Isn't the generator output stud usually on the right side of the cutout and the wiring to the terminal box and harness on the left?
This one seem to be opposite. Am I OK to use for a driver car? Hopefully I have attached some pictures. DSCN3432.jpg DSCN3433.jpg |

Re: Need help identifying generator
Why not on a driver. All ball bearing too. That's what I use. I use one on my 30.

Re: Need help identifying generator
The generator in your picture was used from Oct. 28 through March 30.
The one with the stud toward the rear was used from March 1930 to the end of production. Bob |

Re: Need help identifying generator
Interesting that you asked this question. I just got done taking pictures to post of one that I wanted identified to be sure that it is correct before I take it in to have someone look at it. It seems that I have a V8 one on my 29 AA truck now and want to get back to a correct generator.
Is this one correct?

Re: Need help identifying generator
From what I see, the generator looks correct for 29 except the pulley looks like the one used on the model 46 generator used with the 1933 and later four cylinder B type engines. We need to see the bottom mounting brackets better. If the generator will motor, it will more than likely charge.

Re: Need help identifying generator
I don't have the judging standards. The generator sat outside on a truck for a long time. Still spins but not like it should. I will take it to a gent that works on stuff like this and see if it is repairable. I would think that Bert's would have a pulley if it checks out.
Thanks!

Re: Need help identifying generator
If you take the brush band off and look at the backside of the band you may find a date stamp. There may be a letter code and a number. The letter code for 1929 is J so, for instance 8J would be August 1929. If you have the generator apart there may also be a date stamp on the armature. Similar to the brush band 7J would be July 1929 for example. There may also be a number stamp on the armature indicating month and year such as 829 for August 1929.

Re: Need help identifying generator
If you call Bert's (800-321-1931) for the pulley, you may as well get the correct bolt also, if you don't have it now.

Re: Need help identifying generator
David, did you check with the local generator shop? We are going away fast these little shops but you wouldn't believe the number pf pulleys I've given away. That me of course but I'd check.

Re: Need help identifying generator
I will be taking it to a gent that has been in the business for many moons so perhaps he will have a pulley.
No date stamp on the band that I can find. Hopefully it can be saved. Great advice. Many thanks. Dave
