Default Oil pump aerating oil

Hi guys,

I'm helping a friend of mine diagnose an oil foaming problem with his '29 Model A. He's building a new engine and has put in a modified oil pump and he has modded the oil system to put oil where it wasn't before as well as adding an external filter. He's testing the pump by driving the cam with his drill. Has anyone else tested their pump this way and is this kind of aeriation common or is there something amiss?

Thanks for your help. I'm attaching a video link below.

Cheers

The A/B oil pumps are submerged in oil, so should not pick up any air.

Exactly, so where is it getting aeriated? His pump is well submerged in oil, 10W30, room temp. If there were a restriction somewhere, making a venturi effect, could that do it?

Thanks again.

Maybe the filter has not completely filled displacing all the air

Also explain the modifications to oiling system

just a guess, but isn't 10W30 a bit thin? Maybe a -40 or even -50 will be better?

Just a wild guess, but are you sure that the liquid in the crankcase is an SAE rated motor oil? The reproduction stuff called 600W has poor anti-aeration and will behave as you stated. Maybe that stuff or some other additive is in the crankcase????/

and isn't the green colour also an indicator?

Not sure, is the 'can' installed over the pump? Is there a gasket under it? The top of the can is above the oil level. You could try adding a couple of quarts to see if that helps. Good luck!

I found that the one in my 29 had a leak at the point where they tried to plug off a drilling at manufacture. After cleaning it real well I also found some cracks in the housing. I was fortunate to find one of the earlier forged pumps in good shape so I cleaned it up and checked all the parts out with no discrepancies. It works a lot better than the leaker.
