Default Sun Visor Questions

Hey all! I'm back again to pick your brains.

I recently purchased an original sun visor for my 53 ford customline however I bought it already removed from the car. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea how to secure the sides of the visor to the vehicle. I've tried searching but all of the pictures I've seen of the cars with visors are too small for me to see how they are fastened. Thank you in advance!

I'm not well versed on the 1953 models but FoMoCo purchased Dietrich sun visors for the 1951 cars that I have experience on. They had stainless clamp pieces on the sides that clamped to the rain gutters. I haven't looked around for a while but there was a seller on flea-pay that was selling reproduction pieces. I think the later models with the one piece windshield had to use the top of the car for the center reinforcement piece attachments. The older cars used the center piece on the split windshields for center reinforcement attachment.

Two screws per side as I recall is all that holds mine on the 52 Merc. Plus the big one to the roof in centre. I could get you some close up pics tomorrow if that helps. For now all I have on the computer is this.

This is how the visor in my Courier is attached. It may or may not be correct. Never bothered to research if it is.

Now I don't have to take a picture of mine on the 52 Mercury because I think yours in the photo looks just the same as I have.

Sorry yes i was asking about the outside visor, What are those two side screws being secured to though? i can't help but feel that I'm missing something. I understand that there will be a hole in the middle for the visor to secure it to the roof but on the sides should there be a drip rail or a bracket it bolts to? I'm just lost as to what is grabbing those screws sorry

okay this makes sense that something should be coming off the drip tray and securing it. I know I'm being a bit of a pain but you wouldn't know what the part is called or have a picture would you?

I can see that the later 52/53 cars are similar to the early Dietrich units but have a different clamp. The early ones also used two large head screws per side but the two piece clamp is different on them. The visor sandwiches between the two clamping parts. When the two large head screws are drawn up tight, it provides clamping force to the drip rails. On the later version pictured here, the visor appears to provide part of the clamp with a piece inside the drip rail that pulls up with the outer edge of the visor and possibly another piece to provide the clamping action. A person needs to find those inside pieces and some large head screws to at least have a pattern to work with if you can't find separate parts. Folks that like these accessories will watch on flea-pay until parts come up for bid. You may have to purchase another visor just to get the parts you need if you can't find some separate. Make another set of clamp pieces then sell the visor you don't use to someone else.

A lot of these accessories ended up in the garage rafters or trash heap when folks didn't like them so they end up on flea-pay now and then.

Guess I will have to take another look at mine. I assumed the screws just went into the drip rail as that is all I could see from the outside. The centre base plate of the visor screws right into the roof of the car. You can see the screws from the inside once the headliner is out. It is very solid. No worries about the wind tearing this one off.

No bracket. The screws are large sheetmetal screws. They secure the visor directly to the "A" pillar.

I looked at the later 52/53 cars and you be correct. There is no drip rail there to attach to since it runs around above the top of the windshield. It has to attach to the A-pillar. I guess they figured that since they had to drill holes anyway the they might as well attach it directly to the structure. The older cars with split windshield could have the accessory removed with only the scratched paint on the drip rail to tell it was ever there.
