Default Model A gas gauge parts ?

Among the parts that make up a model A gas guage, are a variety of ‘gaskets’.
Among the gaskets… is a brass band/ring/gasket.
QUESTION:
Without guessing, can anyone explain the function(s)/reason for existence of this metal ring(s), in gas gauge ?

Also, IF THIS IS A proper gas gauge part…. HOW many such brass rings are used in a gas gauge ?

Also, where is brass ring located in a properly rebuilt gas gauge ?

The brass ring is a slip ring that enables tightening the outer nut without rotating the inner parts. In other words, the brass ring reduces friction.

My experience has been that you need more than one brass slip ring. Reason, I have had the assembly bottom out on the threads before it was tight on the gaskets and it leaked fuel. doesn't hurt to put two or three on.

Same experience here. I thought it might be that the cork was compressed a little, found that happened when I fixed a sunken cork float. Added a second brass ring and it sealed better.

Those little brass slip rings work wonders on radiator caps that leak, especially the monometer or quail type.

Hey Tom,
GOOD info and helpful response !
I just got a “ rebuild “ kit from ford parts vendor….NO BRASS RING included !
I reviewed couple of my MODEL A shop manuals. No mention of brass ring… nor where it would be installed !

If a guy needs 2or3 to get a good no leak seal…where can I buy them.

BTW… the gauge that I just took out… has no brass ging(s) !!

No wonder some one put a mess of sealants in to TRY to seal gauge.

Who was the vendor and did you contact them concerning the shortage ?

Use CORK gaskets, NOT the neoprene ones. Some say to assemble with a little Maple Syrup on the washers. FWIW

I revised my tip to have 2 brass slip rings as Tom Endy suggests. As I recall, I did use 2 slip rings to get good clamp-up. Please discard the sketches above and use this one. Double click on the sketch to enlarge it.

Bratton's has extra brass rings. https://www.brattons.com/brass-gas-g...ng-washer.html

Some vendors sell a gas gauge kit with a blue paper slip ring instead of the brass slip ring. I always use the brass one. It is usually the neoprene gasket set that has the paper slip ring.

Some early gauges used "paper" gaskets (1/32 fiber) and the 1/16 cork won't fit, the plate guide hole is too far inward. The newer faceplate tab also needs filing to fit the smaller hole. Steve Plucker has descriptions on his site.

Bratton's carries both the gaskets and the brass shims

13570 gas gauge gaskets $2.50 set
13571 gas gauge brass shims $1.15 each

I got a blue paper slip ring in the kit from Snyder's, I think it was. Too small at least for my repop and it broke. Brass ring from Mike's fit nicely.

FOLLOW UP INFO:
Well I used the schematic of gas gauge proper parts , and installation while finishing up a repair job of ‘29 gas gauge.

Excess sealant usage , was only part of problem !
Whoever put this gas gauge in this A….did not know sequence of parts install.
I got it all cleaned , and all parts/gaskets installed… including TWO brass rings.
Fingers crossed, it wont leak !!
Thanks all for your good help !!
