Default Not doing well with seach

My brother just bought a 1941 four door sedan. Runs but lots of blow by. He want to build a daily driver engine with a bit more poop. I have a later engine (49 to 53)that I will give him for this project. I was doing a search to determine what tricks he will need to know to get the later engine in the 41.

Do both engines need to be rebuilt? If that is the case, I think I would rebuild the '41. It is the "correct" engine for the car and will add value when he sells it. I just like to look under the hood and see the correct engine. Also there will be a lot more changes required which you will see as people post comments. Be sure to also post your question on HAMB as they do a lot more modifications there (https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/).

I am going to assume that the car has a V8 in it now. But just because I want to know is that the case or does it have the 6 cylinder?

If your brother wants an easy and dependable install his best bet would be to rebuild the stock engine and just enjoy the car. installing the 8BA can be done, but it requires many annoying changes, especially when it comes to cooling.

If your brother wants a clean, easy and dependable ride, rebuild and install the stock engine. Too many annoying changes have to be done to install the 8BA, like getting the fan and radiator to fit for efficient cooling. The 8BA won't give any noticeable performance increase. Stay stock and enjoy the car as is.

I wouldn't be so fast to dismiss the 8BA option. A lot depends on the relative condition of the engines. Yeah, the 8BA takes a little more "tinkering" to install, but if it's in better shape than the original engine, the difference in cost starts to rear it's ugly head. Price 8BA rod bearings versus the early floaters for example. Parts in general are cheaper and they are more of a modern engine.

If the '41 runs and the 8BA doesn't, or if you're going for a concourse restoration, by all means use the '41. I don't know about you, but I could do a lot of fiddlin' around for the extra $500 that might be saved.

Crankshaft fan, last of the helmet distributors, different generator, just to name a few differences. He would need the Mercury or truck type half bell plus a clutch that's friendly to closed drive. The oil pan might need to be changed to truck or Mercury rear sump type. The truck type water pumps for 8RT or OCM Mercury water pumps with spacers.

It's not a quick bolt in but it can be bolted in with the right parts. The 100 hp 8BA does have a bit more power than the 85hp 81A with only 221 CID unless it has bean updated to a 99A or 59A motor back in the day
