Remove '41 Door Lock
Backed out the set screw about 1/2", but door lock cylinder is still tightly in place. It is the original kind with the flip down keyhole cover that I want to retain. So how to remove the lock cylinder without destroying the bezel?
I want to avoid removing the door panel, if possible. But if that is the solution, so be it. With the door panel off, can you get to the end of the square lock shaft to tap the lock cylinder out? Tried liquid wrench, tapping the edges with a wood shim, and a pretty good tug with a lock pick hook, to no avail. When I get the lock cylinder out, is there any way to get new keys made for the original cylinder? The original keys are lost. Or, can the tumbler be set to match the new ignition key? |

Re: Remove '41 Door Lock
C&G sells good replacement locks for under $50. Stuck door locks are common, as they are subject to moisture. Trying to pry them out without damaging the door is difficult. Removing the inner door panel is not a big job. Remove the inside trim and handles, then carefully pry the panel clips outward with a thin blade. the end of the handle shank should be then visible so it can be tapped enough to loosen the lock assembly. New locks come with new keys. Usually the ignition key is not made for the door locks.

I want to do the same in my '41 but the set screw won't budge. Guess I gotta soak it with Liquid Wrench?

Re: Remove '41 Door Lock
As supereal says it would be cheaper to buy good replacement locks for $50. i had a key made for 1 lock a few years ago and it cost $90 just to have 1 key made

Re: Remove '41 Door Lock
I'm having the same problem, got the bezel off without paint damage. I have an old cyl. and key. but can't get the set screw to budge. Have tried to drill it out, because someone had stripped the allen wrench hole. Used a cobalt drill to drill , no move, tried an easy-out it stripped it also. Maybe a locksmith can remove the cyl. and install the new one I have. Al

Re: Remove '41 Door Lock
Grumpy...if all else fails you might have to remove the inner door panel to access your lock mechanism.

Re: Remove '41 Door Lock
I had mine out on my '41 I already had the door panel off to fix the vent window, I think I took my set screw all the way out, my assembly just fell out. I had 32phil make up a key from the numbers, his keys worked great. Your door and ignition should be the same key.

Re: Remove '41 Door Lock
Thank's WW I've had the inner panel off looking to see what was, or might be. I remember a small hole on the inside of the door, but didn't know if it lined up with the lock. I'll see if I can find a copy of V8 Mag. Al

Re: Remove '41 Door Lock
In general, I advise taking the set screw ALL the way out. If it falls into the door.... no big deal...... get a new one it won't hurt anything down inside the door.
PB Blaster is your friend...just sayin' I wish I could get $90 to cut a key by code.. !!! I don't advertise my services on the Forum. The "barn'' has a section for "things for sale" drolston...call me and I will help you get your lock cylinder out. 845 551 5132 As far as repro lock cylinders go ...it is a crap shoot on making keys/or matching to original locks as I find the quality and specs are no where near the OEM stuff that came with the cars.

Re: Remove '41 Door Lock
My set screw won't budge, don't know what else I would be damaging by driving it out with a punch. Maybe try a carbide drill when I get back to working on it. I'm kinda up to my arse in alligators right now, if you know what I mean. Al

Re: Remove '41 Door Lock
I wouldn't "drive the pin out with a punch" as it is holding the lock cylinder in place. Also be careful when drilling.....if you go too far then you will be into the cylinder and damage it.
