Default Heater Hose to Lower Radiator Hose Connection

I just returned from a 6 week trip and found a small puddle of antifreeze on the floor that has leaked out of the heater hose connection to the lower radiator hose on my 40. I put all new hoses etc back in early March. I don't think I could tighten the heater hose connection any tighter. My question is this: Is there some kind of sealant that I should have used around the pipe-stud and the semi-round pieces that are on the inside and outside of the connection? Thanks.

Default Re: Heater Hose to Lower Radiator Hose Connection

I just installed an accessory heater in my '40 Deluxe Tudor a few months ago. I was concerned about the possibility of a leak there, so I carefully cleaned inside the lower hose in the area where the nipple exits the hose with lacquer thinner as well as the nipple and its outer half- moon flange and let them air dry. After they were completely clean and dry, I used Permatex black "weatherstrip" adhesive and applied it liberally on the inside area of the hose where the nipple protrudes through and also on the nipple flange where it contacts the inside of the lower hose and inserted the nipple while the adhesive was still tacky. I then applied adhesive to the half-moon nipple flange that sits on top of the hose and installed the nut and tightened everything down properly, but not too much. I let everything get good and dry overnight before I installed the heater hose. I have had it up to temperature on several short drives and so far, I see no signs of leaks. Time will tell whether this fix is effective, but I felt it was worth a try. There may be a better repair process out there, so stay tuned for other responses.
