Jerry, Thanks as always! You are my helper all the time. I took some smaller size images and I hope some answers come.

What caused what?

The end of the centre protrusion has broken off. Normally this sticks through the side cap and a thick O ring type of deal helps hold the two pieces together.

What probably happened is that the side cap stuck in place, and the cap broke by being levered off.

I have filed the od of the inner caps down before now to make them fit.

Mart.

When removing the side contact plate and outer cover they must be removed as one unit. If you lever only on the outside cover the result you have (broken off peg) is often the result. The inner contact plate is often very tight in the distributer body and may have to be filed a little bit around its circumference so that it fits nicely and does not hang up. Various makes of inner caps seem to vary in their outside measurements. The rubber rings which hold the outer covers on are available as a reproduction part. Some O rings might work if you can find a fairly thick one but most are too small in cross section. Regards, Kevin.

If that is an original bakelite cap, maybe the old bakelite just failed. Replace with a plastic one?
