Mart's update: 2021 No2. 32 Sedan Project Pt. 26. New wheels and Tyres!
Hello. Welcome to Mart's Garage.
This week I am going to use a simpler format. I have 2 projects going on, the 32 sedan and the Ol' 59 flatty. I intend to feature one or the other in the updates, rather than both. This week will feature a job on the 32 Sedan. I am old school and I changed the wheels and tyres using levers on the floor. Sort of. It was more difficult than I expected, but I did get it done. So sit back and relax and watch an old fat bloke wrestling around with all sorts of levers and stuff. Take care and I'll catch you next time, which will feature progress on the Ol' 59 flatty. Let me know if the simpler format works or doesn't work for you. Cheers!. Mart. https://youtu.be/JZtm4GZ2lDk |

I enjoyed your antics, you should have seen my wife and I after we mounted a 28” tire on my Ford 8n tractor with tire irons, we were covered from head to toe with black tire rubber dust.
You need on of these to fish your valve stem. |

I have a valve stem fisher like that and a bead breaker and all kinds of levers too. I have changed well over a hundred tires on the floor, maybe 200 and yes, my 8n rears as well. At least half of them were multi piece wheels from 17" to 20". Sooo fun to see someone else doing the same thing I have suffered with ( spelled 'enjoyed'). Mart, you are a kindred spirit and I know EXACTLY why you change them yourself. Well I don't know why I enjoy it either, but perhaps it's the thrill of victory, or is it the huge savings of money, like 12 bucks a wheel here! Oh never mind. My poor wife got the couch-side play by play as I watched you break the bead, work it on around and complete the deed. And two years ago I bought a coates 'Tire Man' manual tire changer at the Poirtland Oregon swap meet for 80 bucks. It has not only changed my tires, but it has changed my life. My son dug me a 3 1/2' circle in front of the shop, we laid in a 8.25 x 20 in it, 4 J bolts for the coates, and a bunch of C-ment. Game changer. End of rant, it's supper time on Mt Pickett......

Way to go Mart, you too, GB. Sounds like you bit the bullet. I can identify with that need. I've changed many a tire myself in my 74 yrs of playing with hobby farming, motorcycles, gardening equipment, lawn mowers and grandkids' toys. Usually wrestling with them on the garage floor. Makes me kind of want a tire changer myself, having operated one as a teen-ager working at Rick's Standard station in 1966-7.
It's probably cheaper for me to keep going to the tire store, tho. Safer, too, at my age. "Keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down" Al Hook |

I bought a cheap Northern Tool tire changer (it looks identical to the one Harbor Freight sells), and after a bunch of necessary modifications, got it functional. What I have found is the the larger the rim size, the easier it is. The 14" wheels on the little lady's mini-van were very problematic. The 15's on my old cars were a lot easier, and, surprisingly to me, the 16's on my beater F-150 were a piece of cake.
I think it has something to do with the ratio of the rim size to the drop in the center. I have heard the 8" or 12" trailer tires are almost impossible to deal with. All in all, I'm glad I got the machine. You save a few bucks, but it's the convenience of not having to go to the tire store and dealing with the wienies working there that makes it all worth while. |

Years ago before Radials Me and the Old Man used to drive over the tire to break the Bead. Of course we were not worried about the condition of the wheel or tire

Great job Mart!!!!....that’s going to be a great looking car!!......I worked in a tire store right after High School and then did my share of pounding and prying on truck tires. I got tired of paying to have them changed at about $25 a piece. I got a good deal on a used spin balancer last summer so I bought a machine new. At 62 and a bad back, I don’t think I could do it by hand anymore.....Mark
