I have seen '39 hub caps that were one piece stainless and/or chrome plated. I think the so called "Spider" hub caps, centers are one piece, not sure if they were an authorized Ford accessory or after-market.

For '39 DeLuxe, the one piece were aftermarket. The originals were two piece. I cannot speak for the others (37-38 and 39 std) Mike

To my knowledge all wide five hubcaps were two piece, except the spider caps. Many repos were one piece.

I think (purely speculation on my part) that the name "Spider" came from the fact that the outer portion of the hub cap (for lack of a better description) covered the spokes on the wheel (looking like spider legs maybe)... At any rate, that sounds like a plausible explanation to me... I know I'd sure like a set of "Spider" hub caps for our '39 CS.

Jan -

Those will never work out for you.

I'll be right over to "dispose" of them properly............

Jan, I'm not sure, they look like '38 Deluxe to me. Here is an example of (what I know to be called) Spider Hub Caps. I've seen this style on '37, '38, & '39 Fords.

Jan, I don't know, I've never had a '38. There are a few guys that post here that have '38's, maybe one of them will chime in with the info you need. Vic

Jan, The answer to you question was posted yesterday. The Spider hubcap was also available as an authorized accessory, and was one piece. It is being reproduced now, but is thin and dents very easily. As always, original Ford parts are best.

The '37 thru '39 were two pieces. The center stainless steel and the outer/backing painted plain steel. They snapped together.
They can be seperated very easy. Drll a small hole, about 1/8th" in the backside plain steel portion. Be careful not to drill thru the stainless. Somewhere in the center. Take a air gun with about 80 to 100 pounds pressure and seal it to the small hole. Just a short jolt of the high pressure air will blow the stainless cap away from the plain steel cap.
Then you can knock the dents, scratches and polish the stainless; paint the plain steel, then snap them back together.
Have fun

Jan,
Your '38 deluxe caps are aftermarket one piece types.
Cheaper to manufacture than the 2 piece metal and stainless inserts.

missed one 36 was the first of the wide five. and ALL of Henry's wide caps, are two piece ie stainless and the can/base metal, and always painted, sometimes body color in early years,,,or black and often seafoam green ?? go figere?? ...The aftermarket ( repos, or repops ) junk, to the collector, are one piece and often all chrome, or if someone was replacing one, paint it ?? ..You can always see the "V-8" on the back, insides, and on the back of 38 and 39's you can see the V-8, but the figures are wider than the releaf on the face, room for a tight fit ?? whatever ?? If your looking for caps to restore, PM me, I'll send pictures ..... OLD....BILL
