Mallory Magspark coil
Hello I was hoping someone could let me know if this old coil has a good Reputation ,It is a old mallory 6 volt magspark also is there one for pos. grnd and one for neg. grnd.It is a box type coil plastic or bakelite it has two ballast resistors on it,was going to use it on my 35 dive bell dist. with an adapater. Also thought about having skip rebuild the stock one but i am not sure if it is doable being it has a hairline crack, will this affect the rebuild? thanx in advance pete.

Re: Mallory Magspark coil
Pete - "In the day", the Mallory Magspark was considered great. Hopefully, Bubba (Jim Linder) will jump in here. He can tell you, definitivley, the pros and cons of the coil. If you want to go original, I think I have an original one that is a good core. PM me if I can be of assistance.

Re: Mallory Magspark coil
Pete,
I ran a Magspark on my '53 Olds running a built J2 motor....Dist and Magspark was about $50 total at the time in '59.....it was a great setup and stretched my spark plug life noticeably. I am sending an exhausted 6volt Magspark down to Skip and George Mitchell to see if they can do their magic with it. Great vintage look ! |

Re: Mallory Magspark coil
Pete; Ran a Magspark with my Mallory dual point dizzy for a lot of years on my 50 flathead. Good combination. Most of the 6 volt Magspark coils I've seen are pos ground. If you look at the top of the coil, between the two resistors, there is a small circle. Inside the circle will be a number and letter. IE: 6P or 6N same with the 12 volt coils 12P or 12N. The letter of course denotes wheather it is + or - ground. Hope this helps.

A cracked one either must be repaired ( rebuilt) or not used . If its oil filled then the oil will run out etc... I have aold manual on magspark coils and they made a few variations designed just for their distributor used in the day. I just looked in a old ( 1963) Honest Charlies catalog and they were marketed as: The rev pol, double life, flash fire and mag spark..... |
