Default '32 Model B ignition lock

Below is a letter received from the gentleman named within. I have his phone number, will PM to someone who can offer him assistance. He is in the SF Bay Tri Valley area.

Hi, Re: repair of locking ignition

Wondering if your group could provide guidance. Have 1932 model B pickup (owned about 40 years) key broke off in locking ignition, had locksmith try to create new key without success. Now sitting until I resolve.
Feel stuck, and afraid to take to someone unfamiliar with ignition, I am very willing to pay, just looking for someone to do the work.
Thanks,
Tom Richert (cell 925-989-XXXX) ~ PM for phone number ~

Hey Sheldon ....I may be wrong, but it sounded to me like the locksmith had removed the key, but couldn't figure-out how to make a plausible new one. DD

Ah okay DD. If the remains of the key is intact a key maybe be cut from that also if a code can be pulled off the cuts.If not The cyl will still have to be removed to have a key cut or take the car to the locksmith and have him try to pick the lock. The only person I knew that could do that is retired and is in Iowa.
Also maybe the door lock cyl would be a clue.same key? If unknown- remove and have a key cut to that code. There is a chance that it is.

I agree with Sheldon that the first step would be to see if the door lock key works in the steering column lock as they were the same key code when the truck was built. At the very least to compare that what is left of the column key with that of the door lock. If one or the other were changed over the years, the best bet is to drill out the column lock cylinder retaining pin from the back of column bracket and send it off to 32phil in NY who may be able to save it or perhaps have a replacement if it cannot be saved as NOS lock cylinders still turn up from time to time. When replacing the lock cylinder in the column bracket, he should tap the retaining pin hole with a #8-32 tap and use a headless set screw to retain the cylinder.

Perhaps a good first step might be to send a p.m. to 32phil and provide him with the rest of Tom's telephone number.

IF the key is STILL broken off in the lock, try you tube as there are a few videos that my help, one using picture wires and another using a hot melt glue stick...the latter taking a few try's and a little know how of trimming the end of the glue stick.

Remember that the broken key can only be removed/extracted if the lock is in the locked position. (Locked column position)

Thank You DavidG
FlatheadCoupe is correct
The cylinder must be in the off position.
With some efforts already failing I suggest removing the cylinder and sending it to someone who can correct any issues with it properly without more damage. I have received way too many damaged cylinders beyond repair.
I can help, PM me.
