Default Bearing pour: factory or jobber ?

Here are some pics of the main bearings in an engine I'm working on...

Do these look like factory pour, or a later jobber ?

(Judging by the look of the groove and oil-hole on the upper rear main, I would think "Jobber" ?)

Later rebuild.

Some of the tooling looks KRW like.

The caps may have been purchased.

But I could be wrong.

My brother was going to post some picts of original bearings. We have a lot of engines laying around (think we are up to 30) so we (more so my brother to be honest) have seen many different babbitt jobs.

The babbitt above I felt was redone because the oil groove looked funky. It is not, it is just pushed over some from wear. It is more likely that is original babbitt.

The caps you have are great. You can see all the original machining on the ears so no one has filed them. A big plus for caps.

The oil relief along the edges is a great example of factory or the KRW tooling. Not some of the molded in or kind of hand made stuff that some bearings will have.

Take some time to note how tight the babbitt lays against the block and caps. This shows proper peening. My guess is that if you press the edges of the babbitt in the block or rear main you will not see movement of find oil squishing out.

Take your time to play with this babbitt. Push it, put the crank in it, get a feel for how proper babbitt should be. May sound like a strange thing to do, but you would surprised what you learn if you take apart a bunch of engines and play with what you have.

Define all right?

Likely in better shape then what is in some cars running today.

Really, you could put a car together with the babbitt in that condition and drive it. It might go for a while.

That is one of virtues of poured babbitt, it fails gracefully.
