Default Can anything be done for leaky fuel shut off.

I have a 31 indented firewall Huster / Woody. I replaced the fuel shut off with new repro. Problem is she wont shut off enough to keep from leaking.. Can anything be done to remedy this ?

Is the gas leaking to the carb, or is the valve leaking externally?

Either way, I'd take it apart and see if you can fix it. I fixed my original 1929 by polishing the tapered part of the valve, then lapping it with toothpaste.

If you bought a new shutoff valve, and you're sure it's leaking, I'd return it for another one. I replaced three shutoff valves on my As, and none of them leaked.

Why try to repair a new valve? Return it to the vendor! wayne

I was thinking about lapping. Was just wondering if that's something that had been tried. I would return seeing it's new, but it's was actually put on new last year to drive in my daughters wedding. Was one of those things I just kept meaning to get to. Now weather is nice I'm back out tinkering. I'm not going to send back. My own fault for waiting.

At a hardware/plumbing place, for $2.99, you can get a perfect fitting needle type valve, that ends your problems. Take an old valve for a SAMPLE.

Also the valve could have gotten a scratch from junk in the tank.
Did you install the small filter with the new valve?
They work fine, even on indented tank valves.

Where do you put the small filter on the indented tank valves? Only place I could figure out is downstream of the valve.

I stuck the screen in the valve inlet, then screwed the valve into the tank. On one I had to tin the screen for a bit tighter fit.

Then, you have to remove the valve to clean the screen?

Yes, and the same would be true of the under tank valve. But if the tank has that much junk, then it needs a good flushing first anyway. I've never had to remove and clean the tank screen.

I'll be trying the tooth paste lap method. And to answer an earlier question, yes I have the screen filter installed. I think after dis assembly that the hole inside the barrel may have had a rough spot and as turning of and on a few time it made a bit of a groove on the tapered stem.

If its leaking AROUND the opening, a bit of Permatex #2 on the threads prior to screwing it in will seal the threads. The new valve should work perfectly.

Well lapping with tooth paste did the trick. I took the innards out put on a light coate of tooth paste.I put the inner stem into my drill, pushed back into the body and gave it a slow spin. All is good. Thanks Barners.
