Re: Help needed engine starting first time
Push the spark lever full up, and pull the throttle lever down a couple clicks.
Have you used the timing pin to check for top dead center on #1 compression? Pull the choke for no more than 2 compressions, or you will flood the carb. It sounds like the timing is off and may be off by 180 degrees. With the timing pin recessed in the small dimple in the cam gear the distributor rotor should be pointing towards the right headlight so the points are just ready to break open for #1. The rotor turns CCW. |

Re: Help needed engine starting first time
Go through each system to see all is set, electric- look to see if you have spark, check your timing with the timing pin and be sure you are firing correct. Check the float in the carb, and the carb settings.
If you try, and it does not start on 3-4 times, shut everything down and wait a few minutes. Let the gas fumes evaporate Look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Xc7r0djEKo and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zju4nagtiCU for some hints on timing Do you have a copy of Mr Andrews book http://www.mikes-afordable.com/miva/...ory_Code=1038A |

Re: Help needed engine starting first time
It is now 20:30 here but i am not going to sleep for it runs!
I think there is something wrong with the timing there is a spark so electric must be ok. |

Re: Help needed engine starting first time
It sounds like you may have a valve stuck. Do a compression test.

Re: Help needed engine starting first time
Glad you listened to Tom W. I once tried to start a Model A with the timing out 180 degrees. I checked for spark, fuel, compression and the distributor looked fine. Finally, checked timing again. 180 degrees out - fixed it. Started.

It's a big satisfaction/relief when you overcome an "issue" on our cars. There will be more, that's what makes it fun.

Re: Help needed engine starting first time
I like to add air as the 5th since there have been times where owners use an oil soaked dirty air cleaner and it restricts the air into the engine.

Re: Help needed engine starting first time
Teun, I would suggest that you set your hood up on end (the back end) on something soft, like cardboard, to protect the paint and to avoid damaging the louvers or the top of the hood.
