Antique Insurance a little off Topic
I have had some of my antique cars insured by State Farm since 1986 and luckily never a claim. Well looks like that will end. I wanted to insure my 51 Crosley Supersports that is all original unrestored. Got a call from the State Farm office they will not insure it because it is not restored and does not look good enough for them to insure it. Well I have checked lots of other companies today and it looks like Grundy will get all of my antique car insurance. By the way I got a kick out of watching the Mecums auction advertising State Farm for antique and classic car insurance! Ok!

Re: Antique Insurance a little off Topic
Just got a quote from a local agent who writes American Modern policies. $15.00 a year higher than Hagerty but with her a get a local agent who will assist with any issues with the home office. My truck is and never will be restored. No issues with the amount I requested for agreed upon value and no restrictive mileage issues.

Re: Antique Insurance a little off Topic
Tell your local independant agent to pick up Hagerty. I have a local agent that over the years has always gotten me the best deal with the best companies.
And Hagerty has an 800 number that is answered. Had to use the towing part and the 800 operator kept calling back to check to see when the driver showed up. Everyone has their favorites -- Hagerty has been mine. They even include parts insurance, so all those extra fenders that you are holding on to are covered. (and their Drivers Club magazine isnt bad either) |

Re: Antique Insurance a little off Topic
Several years ago, while with J.C Taylor, I decided it was time to increase the insurance coverage on my three cars. To do this, Taylor demanded that I have the cars reappraised. Rather than to go through the hassle and expense of a reappraisal, I called Grundy. I was able to get the coverage I wanted with Grundy over the phone with just a verbal description of the cars. Bye-Bye J.C. Taylor....

Re: Antique Insurance a little off Topic
I have been with Hagerty since 2012. One of the most important factors with Insurance is service.
When a truck backed into my door in a restaurant parking lot, the driver hung around and gave me his Progressive Insurance card. I contacted both Hagerty and Progressive and was able to send them pictures with my cell phone. Progressive sent an adjuster out to settle the claim. She told me they would offer between $200-300 or they would replace the door. I tried to explain that sedan doors are not available new and a coupe door wouldn't fit and was way more than that in price. She wasn't swayed and wouldn't offer more. I called Hagerty and immediately spoke with an agent. He told me to take it to the shop of my choice and get a quote and send it to him- which I did again with a picture on my phone. Hagerty would send me a check for that amount and they would get the money from Progressive. It couldn't have been easier for me. I got a check in the mail a couple days later for the full amount. Go with Hagerty. If you ever have to file a claim, you'll be glad you did! |

Re: Antique Insurance a little off Topic
I started with J C Taylor via my Farmers agent. Collision insurance only was about $400.00. I called Hagerty and my yearly cost dropped considerably. I also have AAA so I have roadside assistance/towing which I've had to use. When we had a fire in my garage/shop Hagerty sent an adjuster out in a couple of days and even offered to have the truck towed to the repair shop as I didn't have time to deal with it while getting my house and shop rebuilt. My Farmers agent now has Hagerty available so I have a local contact. Think I'll stay with them for now.

Re: Antique Insurance a little off Topic
One aspect of the above mentioned insurance companies IS.....we were involved in an accident while trailering our car to a long distance show!!! We hit black ice (totally UN-expected event)and were trying to get off the highway and got T boned......Fortunately the antique car didn't suffer any damage, our tow vehicle DID. The point being a law suit ensued (no pun intended) and Grundy (Or Hagerty don't remember which BUT One of the two) "opened" our policy, every vehicle, every value etc etc to the opposing attorney to use to "pad" his case!!!! SO. I'm not legal expert, not sure IF that is a "requirement" of the insurance company to do so OR part of a "multi car" or "collection" policy that all of that information IS revealed BUT it is sure worth asking the questions!!!!!

Re: Antique Insurance a little off Topic
I used State Farm one time, I tried them for motorcycle insurance. As a result, I'll never use State Farm again for anything ever. Worst claim settlement experience imaginable. They require you to hire lawyers for everything, and the lawyers even get pissed at their tactics. Coverage is useless if you can't get paid.

Re: Antique Insurance a little off Topic
I hate to see anyone having problems with any type of insurance. It is not what we payed for. I have State Farm and have never had an issue them. In fact a couple years ago the avatar car ate itself with the ring and pinion while I was about a hundred miles away. I had it put on a wrecker flatbed and hauled home for about $500. Went down to my agent and had a check for the full amount in about 20 minutes.

Called Hagarty, and asked about my 35 project, they will insure it for agreed upon amount.
Not running yet, as is. And I can update as I go. Reasonable price too. I think that’s pretty good. |

Re: Antique Insurance a little off Topic
I've had Hagerty for over 20 years; just switched the coverage to my '40 as it's on the road now. One quick phone call, they accepted my value no questions asked and I had the new evidence of insurance via e-mail within 10 minutes... no hassles at all.

Re: Antique Insurance a little off Topic
The idea with any antique car insurance is they send pictures out to an underwriter and won't insure a $500 car for $5,000. This will be the same for any insurance company. I had an unrestored 41 woodie without any wood, looked like hell. They would insure it for what I paid. They would up the amount by what I spent on it if I showed them receipts. IMHO you are way better off with any antique car insurance than standard insurance unless you drive it every day. With standard insurance the car gets depreciated for milage etc.
I own a 2004 Toyota MR2 which is a semi collector car. Book value for the car is around $5k as a used car. Paid $11.5k for the car with 7k miles in 16 years in like new condition. I drive it every day so can't get collector car insurance on it as they won't insure a daily driver. So I have liability only figuring paying $1000/year for collision would not be worth only getting $4k if totaled. Also not a good idea to drive your collector car to the grocery store or work as the insurance is for pleasure driving only. If you don't follow the insurance restrictions you can end up not getting paid for an accident.

I have had Grundy for about 30 years. I Had three Major claims without any issues. Imagine explaining to the agent how you backed into your Wifes' Buick.

Re: Antique Insurance a little off Topic
Just some general musings...
I worked in the insurance business as a damage appraiser for American Family. Heard and saw lots of crap out of State Farm and Farmers as far as settling claims. Someone mentioned being involved in an incident where their door was backed into and their insurance paid (although not at fault) and then collected from the insurance company of the other party- that’s called subrogation. It usually results in your insurance rates going UP. If you somehow “escaped” consider yourself fortunate. I’ve got Condon Skelley for classic car insurance. No claims though, so I can’t describe their performance. CS is a broker, some of their carriers are Liberty Mutual, Wausau, etc. Like aviation insurance, the policies are very specifically written for Condon Skelley and not generally the typical underwriting you find under Liberty Mutual, etc. |

All insurance companies are very good at receiving your payment. I might guess they all get a AAA rating for that.

I've had Grundy for years. Had two cars('40 Fords) damaged in the last big earthquake. Grundy sent out an adjuster and they covered all the damages. Their rates are way less than the big companies like State Farm.

Re: Antique Insurance a little off Topic
Same here. Got my magazine Tuesday had a good article on Mustangs.
Hagerty is hard to beat. Grundy is good too they tell me. I never heard of anyone having trouble with State Farm on antique cars, this is a first. Until recently. State Farm is out of Bloomington, Illinois. I know a young guy that got a job down there at the home office about 12-13 years ago when he got out of college. He just quit them last winter and moved his family back to the Quad Cities area. I asked him 'why' and he said 'Because they are not the company they used to be, the work place is toxic they treat everybody like crap now adays. They called us into a room. 10 of us, and said 8 of you will no longer be employed here in 90 days and we haven't decided who were going to cut yet, so show us what you're made of.' Steve told me they could shove their company he wasn't working under those conditions. My point is, sounds like a good company going bad under poor management, probably why they treated yo that way on your latest antique car. Sounds like they are chasing profits over people like so many companies do when they get to big. |

I have Condon & Skelly for 40 years. They insure all my Junkers for whatever I tell them. They use to what how many miles I drive them. But not any more. I never did check prices any place else. Never had a claim so I don't know what to expect from them. I was rear ended in my 57 Chevy in 1987. The Chevy was totaled. State Farm insurance paid me 21,409 for my Chevy. They did not give me a hard time. That what I ask them for.

Re: Antique Insurance a little off Topic
Another vote for Hagerty. My local agent carries them. Love the agreed value and low hassles. Their magazine is exceptional. The articles and photography compare with very expensive magazines, nothing like the usual freebie rags.
