Default Got it running, now it knocks and vibrates...

With the help of the barn I learned how to start the A again and took it for another shake down run around the neighborhood.

Now that it's starting and running I have more issues.

I can hear a clicking sound...doesn't sound like what I remember rods knocking sounds like. I did the wooden stick to the ear and touch the engine and I've eliminated the water pump, the generator, and such.

Putting the stick on the bottom flange of the block narrows it down to the middle to rear of the lower end. Any hope of it being something that will not require me tearing into the engine?

Also, there's a vibration, that increases with engine speed...should I assume this is related?

These engines had the Vibration designed into them, well almost! But they don't run like a modern engine with counter weighted crankshafts an d counter revolving balance shafts.
Have you checked you compression? You may have a sticky valve. Short out your plugs one at a time and see if you can isolate it to one cylinder. If it is a valve, a little Marvel's Mystery Oil should loosen it up. That's all I can do at a distance, Good Luck!

Is the vibration while driving or idling?

It doesn't really vibrate much at idle, just as I start to increase the rpms...but it increases in intensity with the increase in rpms...

I'll try the MMM tomorrow. I really didn't wan to start with engine work this soon.

That's exactly what my 29 did when I bought it.
I dropped the pan and found ALL of the center main babbit laying in the bottom of the pan.

I'm not sure how much experience that nyou have and this is a long shot but could save you some hard work. An exhaust leak can make a clicking sound. With the engine cold, remove the fan belt. Start the engine and quickly before the manifold gets real hot ,feel around for leaks between the manifold and block and at the connection of the head pipe to the manifold. With the fan belt removed and the fan not blowing air, an exhaust leak can be easily found. you can rev the engine at the carb with one hand while the other hand feels for leaks. I've seen a clicking sound caused by a leaking manifold gasket fool people that I would have thought would have known better. This may be the best hope. Otherwise it could be wear at the center cam bearing causing the camshaft to rattle in the block or the center mauin bearing.

The two piece timing gear can do the same thing but the noise will be at the front. The metal center comes loose from the fiber gear and will make a clicking noise.

As soon as I can get to it, I'll check for exhaust leaks! I originally thought the vibration was the exhaust rubbing somewhere. That's pretty common on the Brit cars I've been working on lately.

I'm off work all next week so I should be able to get to it sometime...after the honey dos.

Is it a vibration or a rattle.
