Default Speedometer Repair

Found out today that my speedometer problem was not the cable but a problem in the head. It's a 1951 Mercury 4 door w/mercamatic. Any one know of a repair facility. I live just south of Portland, OR but can ship the head if necessary.

I've had good success with Bob's Speedometer Service in MI. Fair prices, quick turnaround.

Bob (Bruce) has made a couple of videos. Looks like he feeds his family well from this business!

Hello,

Old thread but wondering the outcome of your speedometer. I am looking to repair my speedometer for my 1951 Mercury 4door w/mercamatic overdrive. Speedometer wasn't working when I got the merc and previous owner didn't give me any history, all he said was "doesn't work". Anyway, doing some research and found your thread. Did you ever get it fixed? Send it anywhere to get repair? Did you pull if off yourself? How dificult was it to get and any illustrations out there you know off? My apologizes for bombing you with all the questions at once.

I have the shop manual but doesn't seem to be a section on the speedometer. If anything I would like to pull it off myself and have it rebuild.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. Going to try and see if its something I can do but from what Im hearing, its pretty specialized project. I did find a shop here in my area Paramount Speedometer but seems the shop is closing or close. The gentleman I spoke over the phone seemed real knowledgable about old speedometers but closing shop. Hopefully I can find another local shop in my area, if not will give em a call and see if I can ship and what not.

Thanks again for your reply Les!

Well my speedometer and my clock need work, since a repair shop is most definitely the answer for me. I'm gonna try to disassemble it beforehand. 1 of 2 things will happen. Either I fix it or don't. At least I will have some knowledge of how it works.

I had good luck with Bill Heideman 937 492 7800 on rebuilding a '36 speedo. Nice to deal with.

I see speedos for the 50/51 Mercs on the flea-pay now and then. The real fun is getting it out and back in. When I did my first underdash repairs, I found so many problems with wiring and other thing that I pulled the whole dash out to fix them all at once. It is quite a job but in my case it was a necessity.

I have to pull the hand brake down out of the way just to get to the fuse block. The vent & heater controls are right on each side of the speedo then the steering column is right below. It has six little hex headed & slotted screws that hold it to the shadow box housing. Luckily there is none on top center. There are just three on each side.

I've learned it is near impossible to get the waterfall section out of the dash without pulling the whole thing. The dash only has the two bolts on the side and a bunch of sheet metal screws just under the windshield garnish molding to hold the whole dash in. It's best to pull the steering gear out though plus pulling the wire harness & cables loose so it's no walk in the park.

It helps if you are a contortionist for most everything under the dash in the Mercs.
