My friend from this forum likes dogs, just as most of us do of course. So I sent him a YouTube link to a spectacular dog show and he responded to say how he enjoyed it. He continued on and spoke about his lack of knowledge of the internet. Now that’s a shame because it is both informative and entertaining compared to drearysome TV which struggles to deliver either.
Having said that I too have difficulty with the many incorporated electronics features on equipment that are really not needed. That includes modern motorcars with too many bells and whistles. Example. I have been driving my sons ute for about a month. It drives well but I can’t figure out how the radio works.

I gave my friend (the fellow who likes dogs) some advice. Go to town and find a young kid who knows all this stuff. You can identify him as being about 12yo, his cap will be turned front to back, he will have long hair and pimples on his face. His jeans will give him a bolshie appearance having been cut at knee height. He will be walking or seated engrossed in an electronic game or communication or a dating ap (ap meaning application I believe) and maybe have audio plugs in his ears. He knows it all and you may convince him to help you. So yes, help is at hand.

Footnote. The dog show is worth a watch and here is the link.

Chapter 1.

Howard's Purchase.
I lived at Finley NSW and Howard lived 10 miles east. He owned a gyrocopter, had his own airstrip and lived in his hanger.
I had a Mooney aeroplane for sale and Howard took a liking to it. I said to him to take it home and see if he liked it enough to buy it. He reckoned that was a good idea. I called him some time later and yes he wanted it. I said that’s great but just keep it and pay me in the new financial year which was only a couple of months away. He thought that was great too. He flew into town twice and I cleaned it and gassed it. All complementary.
Well the new financial year arrived and I called the man only to be told he no longer wanted it. I had paid for not only the fuel but the interim other fixed costs including maintenance and insurance. He had knowingly done the wrong thing by me and I accepted it without a fuss and once again my wife called me a sucker. But it didn't end there.
A short time later Howard called to tell me he had left a map, ruler, pencil and rubber in the plane. And a few days later he called again asking for the return of same. He was starting to irritate me now. I returned the first three of those four. Some days later he called yet again to see if I had found the rubber. (I must point out to the American readers that here, down under, what we call a rubber is not a contraceptive devise but it is what you call an eraser). He was really irritating me now.
In good ‘ol Aussie it is practice to make a contribution to a party or a social event by taking something, usually liquor. Well my daughter in law tells me that Howard has a six pack that he takes to each party he attends and departs with the very same 6 pack he brought without ever having opened a single bottle. She says this 6 pack has attended so many parties the bottle caps and cardboard carry pack have started to fade.
Howard has avoided me ever since. Understandably.
Footnote. The picture of the Mooney was not mine but came from the internet.
End of chapter 1. Chapter 2 is next story.

Chapter 2

A Country Practise.

The above name was once a TV soapy in Australia. Phoney in many ways but popular with urbane folk in particular because 80% of our population live within 50 miles of the coast and farming and farmers are a bit of a mystery to them.
Real country practise is basically community support and trust. Monetary wealth is not found here with the exception of corporate ownership.
In my15 years of owning a business the only two questions I asked a new client was their phone number and address. They all paid except those who went bankrupt and I simply wrote their debt off. Bankruptcy is almost always due to drought or low commodity prices which sometimes don’t cover growing costs. Their word or a handshake is always a commitment they have made and will honour.
So I was unaccustomed to dealing with the likes of Howard.
I have been caught three times as a buyer. That is another story which I will follow with and call it Chapter 3.

End of chapter 2.

Gullible Gary. (Chapter 3).

I believed my computer was troublesome and I responded to an internet site with the name Microsoft in their address. They also mentioned that name in their splurge. Over three days at random times we communicated by telephone and I began to suspect their authenticity because of the telephone link changed several times and the connection quality declined each time. I also found the people I spoke to had different speech accents each time we spoke. I took my computer to a specialist repair shop and was advised there was nothing wrong and advised these Microsoft people likewise. They continued to call but now demanding payment for their services. In time they went away but were substituted by a debt collection agency who became quite troublesome. I then contacted a government scam agency and put the two names forward. When I advised the debt collectors I had done this they declared they would quit pursuing me if I withdrew their name. End of story.

The second instance was when I responded to an advertisement for an expensive tractor at a give a way price. The old adage should have applied; when it’s too good to be true it’s probably not. By email I was told it belonged to a brother-in-law who was now in old age care and everything was to be sold. Whilst it wasn’t on eBay, they the sellers advised, eBay would conduct the transaction. I received an invoice with the tractor serial number and other pertinent information . The invoice head and all looked totally correct in every respect so I just couldn’t get the money to them fast enough: through western union. An additional email arrived claiming the brother-in-law said the money was insufficient and demanded more. I knew at that instant I had been conned and subsequently figured the document had been constructed by a clever artist. I am quite a gullible person and accept people at face value. And it would have taken only 5 hours to drive to the location. Bugger.

The pictures were authentically Australian but it became clear the transaction was conducted from Nigeria. I have a friend who worked there tells me the millennials are well educated but have little job opportunities. It is lucrative for them to work in internet fraud. Many have now immigrated to south east Asia.

The third story is a face to face deal. To add it to this would make this story too long. I’ll write it and post it next.

.
Chapter 4.

In the 80’s I built a house with walls constructed from the bricks of an old homestead that burned beyond rebuild. They were more than 100yo and were retrieved and semi cleaned by a enterprising bloke with excess labour in the form of his many children. Before the delivery had been completed he changed the agreement and wanted more money. I didn’t pay that excess and stood on principle and dignity. Well he took me to court. The amount was only $1,500. A solicitor representing me pointed out it was not inconceivable the case could last a couple of days potentially costing 20k. That and other things he said and they way he said it made me nervous. I paid. As I drove home I felt quite bitter and was later told courts are not about justise but are about making a settlement. I made a resolution which I have adhered to ever since. That is I would deal only with people I felt comfortable with. It works. I have also learned the term ‘commercial realism’.
___________________________________________
Whilst I have been composing the above, I have received an email from “Lisa” asking if this is my new email address. About a fortnight ago I received an email with an invite attached. Some unknown person wanting confirmation of my address which no doubt will be followed by a scam or demand of some sort.
___________________________________________
I get numerous calls from the tax dept stating I owe money. I tell them there is no problem, just put a bill in the mail. It never turns up and I need not wonder why.
___________________________________________
This one is so repetitious. I receive a phone call, a recorded voice, and I am told your internet has been scammed, press 1 on your phone to have it resolved otherwise it will be disconnected within 24 hours. I do press one and tell the respondent (real person this time) that would be so pleased to have it disconnected because I have tired of it. It never is of course. For this call I have another response to a real person. I ask as many questions as he or she are patient enough to answer. When the other party is starting to become a little impatient I say, there has been a mistake and when asked what it is I say I don’t have the internet. I get one of two responses. One, they simply hang up or two, I receive a long tirade of abuse.
___________________________________________
I do have another. And by example, seller of American Express credit card. It goes like this.
Good morning Sir, (this bloke had good manners). Do you have American Express.
No I don’t.
Do you know American Express offers this, and this, and this plus free travel insurance, plus this and this and this.
No, I didn’t know that. That’s interesting. I stretch the time taken for as long as the seller can stand it.
Then comes the sales and it goes like this, “are you interested?”
To which my response is “not particularly”.
Well if they waste my time I figure out I too can waste theirs.
___________________________________________
Another way to be rid of sales people quickly is, and again by example. I can be in new car show room and a sales man approaches. He is smiling and greets me with a handshake.
He might say, now that’s a nice model to which I respond, yes it is isn’t it.
He tells me the merits of the vehicle which can take a little time and then askes would I like it.
I respond with ‘oh yes I would’. He smiles again and I further add but I don’t have the money. His smile drops off his face followed by his disappearance. A fairly rapid disappearance.

There’s some strange place names. I’m sure we all know some.
Listening to the radio this morning (much more informative than TV), a woman called from Dingabledinga pronounced dinga bli dinga. It is located between the wineries ‘Lazy Ballerina’ and ‘Down the Rabbit hole’. These names are all ridgy and can be found in Google Maps if you don’t believe me.
What are some funny place names near where you live?

One funny name about 100 miles from me is Fries, VA. It’s pronounced Freeze (not like French fries).

Intercourse PA is just a few miles from Blue Ball PA, which is frequently mis-stated as "Blue Balls".

We have a lot of American Indian-named towns here in SoCal, they are sometimes weird but not like those mentioned above! from Jim B in Temecula, CA.

A Funny Incident

Years ago I regularly sprayed a large tomato farm every ten days for a farmer named Noel. One of Noels farm workers with the nick name of Rusty reversed his nice Chrysler Valiant out of the shed with a read door open. It was crunched on the shed post of course. Well Rusty had once being a panel beta and it was no great hustle to rectify. Off to the motorcar wrecker where purchased a new left-hand rear door. He painted it and screwed it on to the body, then with a firm hand closed it. Bugger. Noels Valiant was a VIP and Rusty’s donor motorcar was not. It was four inches short.

Another funny for today.

My friends mid twenties son has decided to leave home and take care of himself. Mother must have thought it was overdue. She clenched her fist, punched the air and let out a hora. Dad wore a grin indicating approval.
Sometime later they were invited to his house for dinner. They had the usual pleasantries and were served up a pleasant meal. From the dining room they moved to his bedroom, ate their dinner and played on their iPad. Son was quite taken back and asked why they would eat in isolation and play games on the computer. “we did believe this to be common practise? We learned this from you when you lived at home”.
