Looking for oil pump seals/gasket
My oil pump (59A) has been taken apart, cleaned up and checked for wear my the machine shop. I am looking for the gasket and or seals for the pump lid and relief valve. I have tried a few places locally and Patricks but I'm up short. Does anyone have a solid suggestion where I can purchase these parts or even better yet have some extras avail? My engine and car are really shaping up fast and I need to keep the momentum moving forward this spring.

Re: Looking for oil pump seals/gasket
If it was to use a gasket and the machine shop checked the clearances without having the gasket how can they properly check the clearances without knowing the thickness of the gasket being used.
The only gasket or seal I know of is for the pickup tube to pump body. |

These are really some of the last small items I need to track down for this awesome flathead. I am looking for someone to supply me with the oil pump lid gasket and the seal for the oil pump relief valve. I have contacted some of the larger suppliers and understandably none seem interested in providing such small parts. FWIW the old paper gasket was .060 Does anyone have these items in their stash or know where it can be obtained? |

Re: Looking for oil pump seals/gasket
I have a spare cover gasket and probably the relief gasket as well. Send me your address and I will send them. The cover gasket is very thin. Probably .015 or so. I can figure it out, but if you have it, send me the dimensions of the relief gasket.

Re: Looking for oil pump seals/gasket
I use a brown paper shopping bag to make the gasket. G.M.

Re: Looking for oil pump seals/gasket
Did the end cover plate originally have a gasket?
The clearance (gear to plate) is important. You can cut your own easily enough. Buy the paper from an engineering supplies shop. |

Re: Looking for oil pump seals/gasket
Why would the OP want to make gaskets from dubious materials and thicknesses when I would send them free?

Re: Looking for oil pump seals/gasket
The cover plate gasket is a special, thin, paper gasket. Significantly thinner than a normal sheet of copy paper and certainly much thinner than the average brown bag.
An increase in gasket thickness is a very bad idea from a pump efficiency viewpoint. |

Re: Looking for oil pump seals/gasket
THANK YOU very much, I am going to take Andy up on his offer of the lid gasket.
Does the pressure relief valve cap or nut require a gasket or seal of any sort? I am confused as I did not take it apart. Apparently it had a serrated "washer" type paper seal. |

Re: Looking for oil pump seals/gasket
Jason, your old cover gasket would not (should not) have been 0.060". it was probably nearer to 0.004" it is quite possible you could run that pump with no gasket at all, with just a bit of sealant. I imagine the clearance between the end of the gears and the cover could be around ).002". You need to find out what the specification is, and deal to it accordingly.
A straight edge and a feeler gauge will show you if the gears are below the surface. Make sure you oil, it before you install it. |

Re: Looking for oil pump seals/gasket
The gasket is a very simple one to make. Find a piece of craft paper(brown bag) of the correct thickness. Determine the thickness you need for from what is needed for the gear end play. No gasket is required under the pressure relief cover.
