Default Remove ign. Switch ‘51 convert.?

My customer lost the key for his like-new ‘51 Ford convertible.
I have removed several from ‘51 pickups and trucks and one from 61 Lincoln, but never from a Ford car of that type.
Can somebody give me an idea of how to do that? Por favor?

Thanks in advance

From the inside of the panel, push the switch towards the back of the car

(it is spring loaded)
Then rotate the chrome bezel to release.

Reach under the dash and push the switch towards the front of the dash to remove the retaining ring. It should drop out from the back.

I have found on some of them it takes a lot of pressure to move the switch forward enough to turn the bezel. Don't know how common that is.

IIRC, the chrome bezel is just "along for the ride". The actual "locking" of the switch is place is accomplished by the plastic insert that fits in the bezel. Take a little care, as the locking piece is plastic, and could chip, break, or just wear out.

Thanks guys.
So its the same as the pick after all. I tried it that way today when I was over there to look at another car but I just didn’t push hard enough. I’ll get it out Monday for sure.

Not sure about 51 but if the door locks are the same it might be easier to take one of those off and have the locksmith make you a key from that. I always thought the lock cylinder had to be removed to get the switch out and that is done with the key.

Good catch, the '51 Merc. ignition and door keys are the same with a second key for the glove box and trunk. Suspect that Fords are the same. ( probably didn't think of it because I no longer have door locks or handles)
