56 Fairlane Power Steering
Is there a filter in the power steering fluid reservoir? If so, part # ? Is ATF type F correct for trans and power steering?
Thank you Steve |

Re: 56 Fairlane Power Steering
I think the unit in the 56' is basically the same as the one in the 53', so this might be helpful:
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...steering+seals The O'Reillys number should read: 51653. As to fluid I use Valvoline Max Life with stop leak. I appears to be basically the same as ATF. Last edited by Merc Cruzer; 06-29-2019 at 08:35 AM. |

Re: 56 Fairlane Power Steering
'TYPE F' ATF was not introduced until the 1968 model run.

BTW - The filter size changed in 54 production (different style pump) and the 54/56 filter size was unique.

Re: 56 Fairlane Power Steering
Unless you have a new or rebuilt pump, I have heard that Power Steering Fluid should not be used with the early Ford pump. The reason I heard that the PSF tends to leak on older pumps because it is made of a different composition than ATF.
I can see not using Type F in a trans, but it's probably ok in the power steering pump

Re: 56 Fairlane Power Steering
- 1956 FORD OWNERS MANUAL Pg.27 - Refer to Nos. 3 and 27. Also review No. 25 TYPE A is very old tech. It was superseded by TYPE A/Suffix in 1959 and again by DEXRON (GM Marketing Term). TYPE F was introduced by FORD in 1968 as it had a special friction modifier to be used with then new frition materials. It was also used in some FORD PS Systems (Refer to Owners Manual). The problem with continual use of a certain type of fluid also changes if and hydraulic part is rebuilt and then the fluid type has to be compatible with the replacement seal(s) material.
